Gettysburg wraps up regular season with 11-10 win at F&M; Bullets to face Dickinson in CC semifinals

Box Score

LANCASTER, Pa. – Jake Van Nostrand (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) collected a game-high five points and Pat Vaughan (Cockeysville, MD/Loyola) recorded 11 of his career-high 19 saves in the fourth quarter as fifth-ranked Gettysburg hung on for an 11-10 win over Franklin & Marshall in Centennial Conference (CC) men’s lacrosse action on Saturday.

Trailing 7-5 early in the third quarter, the Bullets (11-3, 7-1 CC) ripped off five straight goals to go ahead for good, then withstood 19 fourth-quarter shots by the Diplomats (9-5, 4-4 CC) to capture the regular-season finale for both teams.

Already locked in as the No. 2 seed in next weekend’s CC playoffs, Gettysburg will face third-seeded Dickinson on Friday at Washington (Md.). F&M was knocked out of the playoff race with its loss and the Red Devils’ 15-12 win over Ursinus on Saturday.

John O’Bannon (Marshall, VA/Highland School), Chase Stewart (Downingtown, PA/Downingtown) and Evan Gallant (Lutherville, MD/Loyola) all scored twice for the Bullets, who posted their 15th victory in the last 16 meetings with the Diplomats.

Bas Solleveld and Steve Welsh led the Franklin & Marshall attack with two goals and two assists apiece. Colin Hanley also scored twice and added one assist.

Down 6-4 at halftime following a 6-1 Diplomat run, Gettysburg rallied with five straight goals.

Stewart started the run off a Matt Twombly (New Canaan, CT/New Canaan) assist at the 8:34 mark of the third quarter and Van Nostrand scored unassisted to knot the game at 7. Van Nostrand set up Gallant on the go-ahead goal at 5:23 and Stewart made it 9-7 after three quarters off a set-up from Jon Sowanick (Bethesda, MD/Bullis).

O’Bannon netted his second goal of the game to cap the run with 9:58 left and Gallant gave the Bullets an 11-8 lead with 4:27 to play.

F&M’s Kevin Kohl scored with 2:21 left to cut the deficit to two and Hanley made it 11-10 on an unassisted goal with exactly one minute remaining. Gettysburg, however, won the crucial ensuing face-off and ran out the clock to preserve the victory.

Vaughan, whose prior career-high save total of 18 came against both Salisbury and Middlebury earlier this year, halted 11 of the Diplomats’ 19 shots in the final frame. Gettysburg also survived seven penalties that led to three F&M extra-man goals.

With his three-assist effort, Van Nostrand moved into third place on the program’s all-time assists list (95).

The Bullets will seek their eighth CC championship next weekend in Chestertown, Md. The host Shoremen won the title in 2003, snapping Gettysburg’s five-year hold on the CC crown. Washington faces McDaniel in Friday’s other semifinal.
