York pounds out 20-13 win over Gettysburg

Box Score

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Every starter in the York lineup reached base safely and scored at least once as the Spartans pounded out a season-high 28 hits en route to a 20-13 baseball victory at Gettysburg on Tuesday.

Matt Westover, Rajiv Subramanian, Andy Puglisi and Jeff Moore led the offensive explosion with four hits apiece. Westover added one RBI and two runs scored while Subramanian had one RBI and run. Puglisi had two RBIs and four runs scored while Moore added three RBIs and four runs.

Brian Pernice (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown), Nathan Smith (Milford, NY/Cooperstown) and Mike Luteran (Livingston, NJ/Livingston) each had three hits, including a double apiece, accounting for nine of the Bullets' 17 hits. Luteran added a second double in his final home game.

On the day Gettysburg (16-20-1) honored its seniors, both senior pitchers saw action but did not fair well. Dan Armstong (Downingtown, PA/Downingtown) got the start and was tagged for 10 runs (nine earned) on 12 hits in just three and third innings. Tom Gallione (Demarest, NJ/Northern Valley) gave up 10 earned runs on 15 hits in four and third innings.

York (27-14) got things going early, plating six runs on eight hits in the top of the first inning.

After Westover singled up the middle to open the game, Brian Bednarczyk and Justin Heller dropped back-to-back bunts for hits to load the bases.

Armstrong got his only strikeout of the day for the first out before Jeff Moore cleared the bases with a double to the wall in left-center for the 3-0 lead.

Puglisi had an RBI double to make it 4-0. After the second out of the frame, Chad Hockenjos had his first of two singles to score Puglisi for the 5-0 advantage.

Two batters later, Westover knocked home Hockenjos to make it 6-0.

The Spartans stretched the lead to seven with a single run in the top of the second before the Gettysburg bats came alive.

In the bottom of the second, the Bullets batted around and scored five times to make it a two-run game.

Luteran drew a walk to load the bases, Austin Ball (Farmingdale, NY/Hills East) singled up the middle and Chase Straub (Perkasie, PA/Pennridge) singled to center to give Gettysburg its first run.

Mark Campo (Arendtsville, PA/Biglerville) grounded into a fielder's choice to score Ball.

A Pernice double and Smith single cut the lead to 7-3 with runners on the corners and two out.

Ron Lettieri (South Hempstead, NY/South Side) reached on a dropped fly ball by the York centerfielder, allowing Pernice and Smith to score and extending the inning. However, Joe Bonyai (Torrington, CT/Hotchkiss School) lined out to third base to end the threat.

The Spartans added four runs in the fourth to push the lead to 11-5, and the Bullets did not again post a serious threat.

Already leading 12-7, York added eight in the eighth to push it to a 20-7 advantage.

With three runs already home in the inning and runners on first and second with two out, Welch broke an 0-for-4 day with a three-run blast just inside the foul pole in right field. The Spartans added two more on a Jeff Young single down the left-field line.

The Bullets grabbed six of those back in the home half of the frame. Straub opened the inning by reaching on an error and pinch-hitter Brendan McDonald (Bennington, VT/Mt. Anthony Union) drew a walk before Pernice laced a triple to the gap in left-center.

Luteran added an RBI double in the inning and scored on a Jimmy McNamara (Webster, NY/Webster) groundout.

The 17 hits for Gettysburg ties a season high while the 28 surrendered is the most given up by the Bullets in the 18 years that John Campo has been the coach. The last time a team scored 20 runs against Gettysburg was Johns Hopkins in 2002 (22).

Brendan Gilroy pitched the first six innings for York to pick up his sixth win, allowing five earned runs on 11 hits.

The Bullets return to action on Wednesday at DeSales. Game time is 4 p.m.
