Gettysburg ends season with 12-5 victory over York

Box Score

YORK, Pa. – Senior Mike Luteran (Livingston, NJ/Livingston) ended his career with a 4-for-5 day with three RBIs and three runs scored to lead Gettysburg to a 12-5 victory at York in non-conference baseball action on Saturday.

Ron Lettieri (South Hempstead, NY/South Side) saw just his second action of the season on the hill and made his first start, going 8 1/3 innings and striking out three to improve to 2-0.

Brian Bednarczyk led the Spartans (27-16) with a 4-for-5 performance. Justin Heller also went 3-for-5 with an RBI.

After dropping a 20-13 game to the same York squad on Tuesday, the Bullets (17-21-1) jumped out to a 7-0 lead midway through the fourth and played the Spartans even over the second half of the game for their first win in the series since 2000.

Luteran got things going in the third inning, leading off with his eighth career home run. Ben Carey (Colchester, CT/St. Bernard) followed with a single up the middle and Mark Campo (Arendtsville, PA/Biglerville) reached on a fielder's choice, but Carey was safe at second on an error.

Andrew Freeburger's (Baltimore, MD/Parkville) attempt at a sacrifice resulted in the second Spartan error of the frame and loaded the bases.

After a wild pitch scored Carey to make it 2-0, Nathan Smith (Milford, NY/Cooperstown) had an RBI infield single for the 3-0 lead.

Lettieri – hitting for himself – lined a ball into center for the first out, but Freeburger tagged for the sacrifice fly and a 4-0 lead.

Austin Ball (Farmingdale, NY/Hills East) opened the Bullet fourth by reaching on an error. Luteran, Carey and Campo all followed with singles to stretch the lead to 6-0.

A Luteran RBI single up the middle in the fifth allowed Joe Bonyai (Torrington, CT/Hotchkiss School) to come around from second and make it 7-0.

A triple by Bednarczyk and back-to-back home runs by Mike Welch and Jeff Moore in the home fifth cut the lead to 7-3, but the Spartans would get no closer the rest of the way.

Ball led off the visitor eighth with a double and Luteran reached on an error. Three batters later, Freeburger singled to left to load the bases and Smith cleared the bases with a double down the right-field line to give Gettysburg a 10-3 lead.

York cut it to 10-4 in the bottom of the eighth on an RBI single by Justin Heller.

In the ninth, Bonyai drew a one-out walk for the Bullets before Ball singled to put runners at the corners. Luteran followed with an RBI single to center and Carey reached on a fielder's choice to score Ball for the 12-4 lead.

After getting a line-out, Lettieri issued two straight walks, and gave way to Brian Spicer (Haddonfield, NJ/Haddonfield). Spicer came in and got an RBI groundout and pop-out to end it.

Chris Brower got the start for the Spartans and lasted four-plus innings to pick up the loss, allowing six runs on eight hits with two strikeouts.
