FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Freshman Ben Smith netted the game-winning goal in the second overtime to lead Mary Washington past Gettysburg 2-1 in the men’s soccer season opener for both teams on Wednesday.

Senior Chris Borcik (Reisterstown, MD/Franklin) opened up the scoring and put Gettysburg ahead early after netting a goal in the fifth minute off a pass from Brandon Bell (Hagerstown, MD/North Hagerstown).

No one would score again until early in the second half when UMW’s Vincent Kooijam found the back of the net to tie the score at 1.

The Eagles outshot the Bullets 17-13 and had a 6-4 advantage in corner kicks. Gettysburg goaltender Nick Wells-Bundtzen (Williamstown, MA/Mt. Greylock) gathered six saves, including four in the second stanza, while UMW’s Elliot Jones tallied five stops. 

The Bullets return to action in their home opener on Saturday against Eastern. Game time is 2 p.m.
