Box Score

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Nick Ferrante caught, ran and passed for a touchdown as 16th-ranked Hampden-Sydney rolled past Gettysburg 59-16 in non-conference football action on Saturday.

Ferrante opened the Tigers’ scoring day with a 22-yard option pass, hauled in a 15-yard touchdown toss from J.D. Ricca and ran for a five-yard score to help Hampden-Sydney (2-0) post the highest point total by a Bullet opponent since a 60-18 Delaware victory in 1973.

Ricca, a preseason All-American, threw for 235 of his 287 yards and two touchdowns in the decisive first half, guiding the Tigers to a 38-9 halftime lead en route to their seventh straight win over Gettysburg (0-2). C.W. Clemmons carried 19 times for 90 yards and one touchdown in the win.

Defensive end James Riley led the Hampden-Sydney defense with seven tackles, including three for loss and two sacks. Riley also broke up a pass and recovered his own forced fumble as the Tigers held the Bullets to 188 yards of total offense.

Senior Grant Acker (Howell, NJ/Peddie), the Bullets’ preseason All-America linebacker, contributed seven tackles and nine points on the afternoon, scoring on a 62-yard fumble return and a 37-yard field goal. Junior guard Brandon Smith (Lititz, PA/Manheim Twp.) recovered a fumble in the end zone for the balance of Gettysburg’s points.

Sophomore quarterback Mark Campo (Arendtsville, PA/Biglerville) completed 9 of 15 passes for 96 yards in his first collegiate start in place of injured senior Joe Gossweiler (Florham Park, NJ/Hanover Park). Dusty Green (Idaville, PA/Bermudian Springs) carried 22 times for a team-high 69 yards.

Powered by the trio of Ferrante, Ricca and Clemmons, Hampden-Sydney put one of the nation’s top offenses on Full display.

After going three-and-out on their first series, the Tigers needed seven plays on their next drive to march 60 yards and take a 7-0 lead. Facing third-and-7, Ricca found T.J. Calabrese on a 23-yard toss to the Bullet 34 and Ferrante lofted a 22-yard touchdown pass to Jose Ramos four plays later to open the scoring with 8:25 left in the first quarter.

Campo’s 36-yard completion to Spencer Davidson (Dumont, NJ/Dumont) set up Acker’s 37-yard field goal on Gettysburg’s next possession that pulled the home squad within 7-3, but Hampden-Sydney answered with 24 straight points on its next four drives.

Alex Bland connected on a 25-yard field goal to make it 10-3 with 3:49 left in the quarter. On the Tigers’ next march, Ricca found Ben Dull on a 50-yard heave to the Bullet 13, then hit Ferrante with a 15-yard touchdown pass for a 17-3 lead.

Keyed by 37 yards from Clemmons, Hampden-Sydney made it 24-3 with a five-play, 62-yard scoring drive capped by a 17-yard pass from Ricca to Dull with 12:47 left in the first half.

The Tiger defense got into the act on Gettysburg’s next possession. Michael Clark jarred the ball loose while sacking Campo and Ty LaFlame returned the fumble 68 yards to make it 31-3. The Bullets answered with a long fumble return of their own. Michael Schmidt (Huntington Station, NY/Walt Whitman) separated the ball from Daniel Hadra on a punt return before Acker recovered the fumble and dashed 62 yards to cut the lead to 31-9.

Hampden-Sydney closed out the first-half scoring with a six-play, 73-yard drive that required only 50 seconds. Ferrante hauled in a 52-yard pass from Ricca to the Gettysburg 12, setting up Johnny Junes’ four-yard touchdown run on fourth-and-2. For the half, the Tigers rolled up 326 yards of total offense in a mere 10 minutes, 28 seconds of possession time.

Gettysburg drove the opening kickoff of the third quarter 66 yards on seven plays before Smith, in his first season as the squad’s starting right guard, pounced on a Campo fumble in the Tiger end zone to make it 38-16.

From there, however, Hampden-Sydney closed out the scoring with touchdown runs from Ferrante, Clemmons and Charlie Omick.

Nathan Smith (Cooperstown, NY/Cooperstown Central) tied Acker for the Bullet lead with seven tackles and also recorded his first interception of the season. Davidson finished with four catches for 62 yards, both team highs.

Ferrante and Dull each closed the day with three catches for 75 yards. Ricca completed 12 of 24 passes.

Gettysburg returns to action on Saturday at Rochester. Game time is 12 p.m.
