GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Jessica Cortese (Lancaster, PA/Hempfield) and Nicole Barr (Annapolis, MD/Broadneck) combined for 30 kills and 52 digs as Gettysburg volleyball team defeated Eastern 3-2 in the championship match of the 2004 Battlefield Classic on Saturday.

The Bullets (7-2) got revenge after the Eagles (6-3) won last year’s Battlefield Classic in four games.

Eastern took a 1-0 lead in the match with a 30-19 victory before Gettysburg scored a 30-23 win to knot the match score at 1-all. The Eagles took game three 30-24, but the Bullets staved off elimination with a 30-26 game four victory before winning the deciding set, 17-15.
Gettysburg defeated Willamette 3-1 and Moravian 3-0 in pool play to advance to the title tilt.

In the match against the Bearcats (6-2), Cortese became the seventh player in program history to record 1,000-career kills and 1,000-career digs, tallying 21 digs to put her just over the plateau. With 14 digs in the match, Barr came within five of eclipsing the same mark.

Two digs into the championship match, Barr joined Cortese in the exclusive club. The opposite side hitter grabbed a team-high 28 digs – a number that tied her career high. Cortese also set a new career high in the same match with 24 digs as did Steph Vial (Hanover, PA/Delone Catholic), who also finished with 28 digs. As a team, the Bullets finished with 117 total digs.

Junior setter Shannan Smith (Milmont Park, PA/Ridley) one-bettered her previous career-high with 57 assists in the title match.

In the deciding game of the championship match, Gettysburg rallied after being down 5-0 to take a 6-5 advantage behind five straight service points from Smith. After back-and-forth play, Cortese put away one of her team-high 16 kills to open up a 13-11 edge.

The Eagles clawed back to close to within 14-13, but back-to-back errors from the Bullets gave Eastern a 15-14 lead and force a Gettysburg timeout.

A service error out of the timeout knotted the match at 15-all before Katie Heffner (Easton, PA/Easton) found the floor for her 10th kill of the match off a Smith for the 16-15 lead.

After Eastern’s final timeout, a return hit from the Eagles sailed long, giving the Bullets the win and the 2004 title.

In game one, Eastern opened up an 11-2 advantage and never looked back en route to the match lead.

In game two, Gettysburg once again found itself in an early hole, but climbed back to tie the match at 5. With the game tied 10-all, the Bullets grabbed six of the next eight points to open up a 16-12 cushion.

The Eagles once again pulled even at 19-all, but a side-out and seven consecutive service points from Erica Rau (Oakland Park, FL/Pine Crest) gave Gettysburg a 27-19 lead en route to the 30-23 win.

In game three, Eastern notched the first two points before opening up a 10-5 advantage. The Bullets tallied five of the next seven points before a 6-1 Eagles’ run, capped by an ace by Emma Klein, gave Eastern a 17-11 lead.

Gettysburg got as close as two on four occasions down the stretch but could not complete the comeback as the Eagles held on for a 30-24 win and a 2-1 match lead.

Facing elimination in game four, the Bullets quickly found themselves in a 5-1 hole but slowly worked back into the game, tying the game at 12-all.

Two straight kills from Barr allowed Gettysburg to open a 17-14 lead, but the Eagles rolled off six of the next nine points to once again knot the match at 20.

After back-and-forth play and with the Bullets clinging to a slim 27-25 advantage, Vial served a pair of aces for a 29-25 lead, forcing the deciding game.

Erin Barkdoll (Dover, PA/Dover) also finished in double digits in kills (10) while Margaret Hallahan (Huntingdon, PA/Huntingdon) and Smith added 14 and 11 digs, respectively.

In the first match of pool play on Saturday, Gettysburg rallied after dropping the first game to Willamette 30-26 to win the match, 3-1. The Bullets evened the match with a 30-27 game-two victory before taking game three 31-29 and game four 30-22.

Barkdoll led the attack with 15 kills while Cortese and Barr added 14 and 10, respectively. Cortese and Barr completed the double-double with 21 and 14 digs, respectively. Smith added 51 assists, and Vial steadied the 97-dig performance with 27 of her own.

Also contributing double-digit dig performances in the effort were Hallahan (13) and Smith (10). Heffner and Rau added three total blocks and Smith had a team-best three aces.

Gettysburg swept Moravian to round out pool play, winning 30-9, 30-20, 30-28. Barkdoll led the attack with 18 kills. Rau added 10 while Cortese chipped in with eight. Smith added 23 assists.

Vial led the team with 14 digs. Cortese added 11 digs and six aces. Rau also notched six total blocks and Barkdoll added four of her own.

In Friday’s opening match against Gwynedd-Mercy, Vial sparked a 6-1 rally with two straight aces to bring the Bullets back from a 10-4 deficit in game three and complete a sweep of the Griffins, 30-23, 30-21, 30-23.

Barr led the attack in that match with 10 kills while Cortese and Rau added eight apiece. Smith added 23 assists and Hallahan chipped in with 14 of her own. Vial had four aces and a team-best eight digs. Heffner and Barkdoll notched three blocks each.
