Gettysburg posts second shutout of season with 2-0 win over Catholic

Box Score

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Lauren Eby (Denver, PA/Garden Spot) tallied her first collegiate goal in the second half to extend Gettysburg’s lead to 2-0 and lift the No. 16 Bullets (3-1) to a win over visiting Catholic in non-conference field hockey action on Tuesday.

Freshman Katherine Corkhill (Paoli, PA/Academy of Notre Dame) notched two saves to pick up her third win – and second shutout – of the season. Erin Swift made seven saves between the pipes for the Cardinals (3-3), who failed to score on Gettysburg for the first time since 1999, the initial meeting between the two squads.

Playing as a ranked team for the first time since a 3-1 win over Swarthmore on Sept. 29, 2001, the Bullets wasted no time getting on the scoreboard.

On the first penalty corner of the game, Bridget Seidel (Mohnton, PA/Governor Mifflin) redirected a Kelley Mishler (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) pass with 3:04 gone to give Gettysburg a 1-0 advantage.

Maura Downey (Lancaster, PA/Lancaster Catholic) had a chance to make it 2-0 seven minutes later when she broke down the field with Meg Goddu (Chadds Ford, PA/Unionville), but the two failed to connect on a long pass in from the right side.

Eby did make it 2-0 at the 56:09 mark when she converted a pass from Becky Latta (West Chester, PA/Henderson) at the top of the arc. With the tally, the Bullets converted their fourth goal of the season off a penalty corner to set the final margin.

Catholic’s best opportunity of the game came in the 59th minute when Jaime Punyko sent a shot in from the right side behind Corkhill, but Hannah O’Donoghue (Cape May, NJ/Lower Cape May Regional) was there for the defensive save to preserve the shutout.

Michele Repass led the Cardinals with three shots while Jayme Dinsmore added two.

The shutout marks the first time Gettysburg has blanked two of its first four opponents since 1996. In that season, the Bullets held Juniata (4-0) and Rochester (2-0) without a goal.

Gettysburg returns to action at No. 19 Juniata on Saturday. Game time is 1 p.m.
