GETTYSBURG, Pa. Drew Dutrow
scored and York took advantage of a Gettysburg
own goal to result in a 2-1 Spartan victory over the Bullets
in non-conference mens soccer action on Wednesday.
Scott McDowell led Yorks
dominate offensive attack, shooting a game-high four shots,
assisting the Dutrow goal and forcing an own goal in the second half.
With
the win, York snapped a 12-game winless streak against the Bullets
and collected it first win against Gettysburg
since a 1-0 decision in 1991.
In
the 14th minute, McDowell sent a cross from the
middle to Dutrow, who put the
ball past Gettysburgs
goalkeeper Nick Wells-Bundtzen
(Williamstown, MA/Mt. Greylock) and into the
left corner of the net bringing the score to 1-0.
Wells-Bundtzen
was able to hold the game at 1-0 going into halftime, despite
the relentless attacking of McDowell and the York
offense, collecting three big saves.
McDowell
had a part in the eventual game-winner, forcing an own goal
by a Gettysburg defender in the 49th minute
which put the Spartans up for good.
After
the own goal, Gettysburg took control firing six shots to Yorks three. Shots
by David Pone (Bordentown,
NJ/Bordentown),
Brendan Cain (Derwood, MD/Bethesda-Chevy Chase) and Jeffery Collmann
(Elverson, PA/Twin Valley)
showed the Bullets had come to life.
Senior
Chris Borcik (Reisterstown,
MD/Franklin)
scored Gettysburgs
lone goal with one touch off a pass from Brad
Tabor (Kinnelon, NJ/Kinnelon
in the 68th minute.
The
Bullets had a series of three corner kicks in the final
minutes of play, but it resulted in just one shot, a Mike
Leader (Hershey, PA/Hershey)
header that sailed over the top of the net.
York outshot Gettysburg 11-7 and had a 4-3 advantage on corner
kicks. In the goal, Wells-Bundtzen
finished with four saves, while Michael
Cook gathered three stops in the winning effort.
The
Bullets return to action on Saturday when they open conference
play at home against Haverford. Game time is 2:30 p.m.
