GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Shannan Smith (Milmont Park, PA/Ridley) served the final three points to break a 27-all tie and help Gettysburg complete a sweep of visiting York in non-conference volleyball action on Thursday.
The Bullets (8-2) won games one and two 30-24 and 30-22, respectively, before completing the sweep with a 30-27 victory.
Erica Rau (Oakland Park, FL/Pine Crest) led the attack with 10 kills while Nicole Barr (Annapolis, MD/Broadneck) and Erin Barkdoll (Dover, PA/Dover) added nine each. Smith ended the match with 35 assists.
Amanda George had nine kills for the Spartans (6-6) while Kristen Hoffman and Lindsay Johnson added seven apiece.
Trailing 22-14 in the third game, Katie Hertz served seven straight points, including one of her team-best three aces, to pull York within 22-21.
After a pair of sideouts, George recorded back-to-back kills to give the Spartans their first lead since 4-3. George also added her final kill of the night to stretch the lead to 26-24, but kills by Rau and Barkdoll notched the game at 26-all. After a Gettysburg attacking error and a Barkdoll kill, Smith took the ball to serve the final three points.
Earlier in game three, Barkdoll – behind a pair of aces – turned a 4-3 York lead into a 7-4 Gettysburg advantage.
Four straight service points for Jessica Cortese (Lancaster, PA/Hempfield) stretched the lead to 15-9 en route to the 22-14 advantage.
In game one, the Bullets jumped out to an early 10-3 lead before the Spantans closed that gap to 21-18 on two aces by Laura Shaw. Gettysburg held strong down the stretch, however, to preserve a 30-24 victory and 1-0 match lead.
In game two, Margaret Hallahan (Huntingdon, PA/Huntingdon) had two of her match-high six service aces to stretch a 16-11 advantage into a 22-11 lead en route to a 30-22 Gettysburg victory.
Shaw lead York's defense with 15 digs while Johnson added four total blocks. Caitlin McIntosh had all 32 assists for the Spartans.
Steph Vial (Hanover, PA/Delone Catholic) steadied the Bullet defense with 13 digs while Hallahan added eight, and Cortese had seven digs to go along with her six kills and three aces.
Gettysburg returns to action in at the Marymount Tournament on Saturday. The Bullets open the day against Rowan at 11 a.m.
