Gettysburg wins second consecutive tournament; Barr named MVP at Marymount

ARLINGTON, Va. – Senior Nicole Barr (Annapolis, MD/Broadneck) recorded her 20th kill of the match against Penn State-Altoona to give Gettysburg a 15-11 come-from-behind win in fifth game and give the Bullets (11-2) their ninth straight victory and second tournament championship of the season at Marymount on Saturday.

Barr, who recorded 43 kills in three matches, was named the tournament’s most valuable player. Junior Shannan Smith (Milmont Park, PA/Ridley) also garnered all-tournament honors.

After tallying 62 assists in the first two matches of the day, Smith put up a career-high 66 assists in the match against the Lions (5-5) to move into third place on the all-time list with 2,105 for her career, passing her current coach Kim Kelly (2,079 from 1988-91).

Earlier in the day, the Bullets swept Rowan (30-23, 30-22, 30-17) and Marymount (30-25, 30-20, 30-24).

PSU-Altoona won the first two games of the final match 31-29 and 30-27 before Gettysburg came back to win games three and four 30-28 and 30-21, respectively, to force the deciding game.

Barr completed her fourth double-double of the season with 12 digs. Jessica Cortese (Lancaster, PA/Hempfield) also notched her fourth double-double with 15 kills and a team-high 23 digs.

Steph Vial (Hanover, PA/Delone Catholic) added 17 digs while Erica Rau (Oakland Park, FL/Pine Crest) contributed a career-high 15 kills and Erin Barkdoll (Dover, PA/Dover) added 13.

Smith, Vial and Margaret Hallahan (Huntingdon, PA/Huntingdon) had two service aces apiece. Sophomore Hillary Prutzman (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) – seeing her first action of 2004 – picked up where she left of in 2003, adding a career-high seven block assists. Barr and Smith notched five and two, respectively.

Against the Profs (5-1), Barr and Rau paced the attack with 11 and seven kills, respectively. Smith added 30 assists and four aces while Vial had 11 digs and three aces. Cortese added 10 digs.

Barr had five total blocks, and Rau and Katie Heffner (Easton, PA/Easton) had two each.

Against the Saints (8-5), Barr led the way with 12 kills, seven digs and two block assists. Cortese added nine kills and eight digs. Smith had 32 assists while Hallahan tallied three aces.

Cortese’s 15 kills in against the Lions moved her into fourth place on the all-time kills list. She also moved up a spot on the all-time digs list, where she is now eighth with 1085 career digs. Barr also jumped into seventh place on the kills chart and hurdled two spots on the digs chart into 10th all-time.

Gettysburg returns to action in its Centennial Conference opener at Johns Hopkins on Sept. 28. Match time is 7 p.m.
