Lebanon Valley uses penalty corners to upset Gettysburg

Box Score

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Alyssa Stine converted Lebanon Valley's seventh penalty corner in the 31st minute to lift the 20th-ranked Dutchwomen to a 2-1 upset win over No. 15 Gettysburg in non-conference field hockey action on Tuesday at Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium.

Steph Marguglio tallied Lebanon Valley’s other goal and Katie Pawlewicz made four saves to give the Dutchwomen (3-2) their fifth straight victory over the Bullets.

Meg Goddu (Chadds Ford, PA/Unionville) scored the lone goal for Gettysburg (3-2), taking four of the Bullets’ seven shots. Katherine Corkhill (Paoli, PA/Academy of Notre Dame) made one save in the first half between the pipes before Allie Duggan (Rockville, MD/Colonel Zadok Magruder) – in her first action of the season – made two stops in relief.

Taking the fourth of LVC’s 15 penalty corners, Marguglio redirected a Fairyn McCleary pass from the right side to knot the game at 1-all in the 21st minute.

Ten minutes later, Stine found the backboard with the game-winner, scoring from the right side at the top of the arc unassisted.

Goddu opened scoring when she broke in from the left side all alone, pushing the ball behind the keeper and into the right corner of the cage for a 1-0 lead.

Both teams had opportunities to tally in the second half, but neither could find the backboard. Gettysburg’s best opportunity to tie the game came in the 42nd minute when Krissy Browning (Baldwin, MD/Fauston) fired a shot from the left side of the arc – the Bullets’ only of the second half – but it rolled wide to keep it a 2-1 Dutchwomen lead.

Marguglio and Mimi Sullivan had opportunities for Lebanon Valley in the second half but all three of their combined shots went wide.

For the contest, the Dutchwomen held a 15-3 advantage in penalty corners and finished with an 11-7 advantage in shots.

Gettysburg returns to action in its Centennial Conference opener at Swarthmore on Saturday. Game time is 1 p.m.
