GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Sophomore Katie Myers (Randallstown, MD/WSTES) netted the game-tying goal to bring Gettysburg and No. 4 Messiah to a 1-all result in non-conference women's soccer action on Wednesday.
The game was a defensive battle from the beginning with neither team firing a shot within the first 10 minutes. Messiah's Stef Rowe was the first to break through the Gettysburg defense sending a shot wide, but it was Kelly Thomas who put Messiah (5-0-1) on the board in the 11th minute off a serve sent in from Cali Pitchel on the right side.
Myers and Jenny Line (Carlisle, PA/Carlisle) each had scoring opportunities in the first half, but Messiah's goalkeeper Cassie Grose was there to grab the shots.
The Falcons had an opportunity to take a two-goal lead, but Annie Futato had one shot hit the post and another stopped by Gettysburg's goalkeeper Kristin Short/Massapequa, NY/St. Anthony's).
The second stanza turned out to be even more of a battle with each team only taking two shots. In the 83rd minute, Myers broke free of the Falcon defenders at the top of the box and found the back of the net to knot the score at 1-all and sending the game into overtime.
Messiah's Hannah Levesque opened the first overtime up with a shot that sailed high, while Myers had another scoring opportunity but was stopped by Grose with four minutes left.
Gettysburg's last scoring opportunity came four minutes into the second overtime, when Katie Myers got past Grose to an open net, but sent the ball wide left. Myers took five of the Bullets' seven shots, with three on goal.
The Bullet defense, lead by Liz Feldhusen (Acton, MA/Acton-Boxborough Reg.) and Molly Bauer (Camp Hill, PA/Cumberland Valley), managed to hold the Falcons - who averaged 21.8 shots per game before meeting Gettysburg - to just 12 shots. Messiah also had a 4-0 edge in corner kicks.
In the goal, Short tallied four saves for Gettysburg, while Grose also gathered four stops.
With the win, the Bullets (3-2-2, 1-0 CC) snap the Falcons' five game winning streak against them and collected their second tie against a nationally ranked team.
Gettysburg returns to action on Saturday at home against Swarthmore. Game time is 4:30 p.m.
