Gettysburg rolls in conference opener, blanks Swarthmore

Box Score

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Becky Latta (West Chester, PA/Henderson) scored unassisted 29 seconds into the game to give Gettysburg all the offense it would need as the 15th-ranked Bullets went on to shutout Swarthmore 5-0 in the Centennial Conference (CC) opener for both teams on Saturday.

Gettysburg (4-2, 1-0 CC) outshot the host Garnet (5-2, 0-1 CC) 34-15 en route to its third straight shutout against Swarthmore, including back-to-back 5-0 victories. It also marked the third time this season that the Bullets have held an opponent off the scoreboard.

Katherine Corkhill (Paoli, PA/Academy of Notre Dame) made six saves to pick up the fourth win – and third shutout – of her rookie season. Karen Lorang made 15 saves in the cage for the Garnet.

After Latta tallied her first goal of the season in the opening minute, senior Kelley Mishler (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) extended Gettysburg’s lead to 2-0, taking a pass from classmate Katie Lowe (Setauket, NY/Ward Melville) for her second goal of 2004.

Maura Downey (Lancaster, PA/Lancaster Catholic) netted her team-leading fourth goal of the season off a Krissy Browning (Baldwin, MD/Fauston) in the 34th minute to stake the Bullets to 3-0 halftime advantage. The assist was Browning’s first collegiate point.

Lauren Eby (Denver, PA/Garden Spot) made it 4-0, converting a penalty stroke at 60:18 before Bridget Seidel (Mohnton, PA/Governor Mifflin) tallied her fourth goal of the season to round out scoring with five minutes showing.

Gettysburg returns to action at Johns Hopkins on Tuesday. Game time is 7 p.m.
