scored the first and last goal as No. 19 Gettysburg notched
a 3-0 win at Johns Hopkins in Centennial Conference (CC)
field hockey action on Tuesday night.
Braving the remnants of
Hurricane Jeanne and a 35-minute delay to start the game,
the Bullets (5-2, 2-0 CC) controlled play from whistle to
whistle to record their fourth shutout of the 2004 campaign.
Meredith
Shifman recorded five saves for the Blue Jays (2-6,
0-1 CC), who suffered their first loss to Gettysburg
in Baltimore
since 1997.
With the wind at her teams
back, Downey notched her fifth goal of the season 14:56 in the
contest, taking a pass from Meg
Goddu (Chadds
Ford, PA/Camp
Hill).
Ten minutes in the second
half, Bridget Seidel (Mohnton,
PA/Governor
Mifflin) made it 2-0, finding the backboard on a
rebound off a Goddu shot.
In the 57th
minute, Downey notched her second goal of the game on
a rebound.
Johns Hopkins best
scoring opportunity came in the 60th minute when
Morgan Cromwell
(Caton, CT/Canton) made a defensive
save on a shot by Amy
Soergel.
Katherine
Corkhill (Paoli, PA/Academy
of Notre Dame)
made saves on two of the Blue Jays three shots.
Gettysburg returns to action at home on Shirk Field at
Musselman Stadium against Haverford on Saturday. Game time
is 1 p.m.
