Gettysburg braves elements to defeat Johns Hopkins for fourth shutout

Box Score

BALTIMORE, Md. – Sophomore Maura Downey (Lancaster, PA/Lancaster Catholic) scored the first and last goal as No. 19 Gettysburg notched a 3-0 win at Johns Hopkins in Centennial Conference (CC) field hockey action on Tuesday night.

Braving the remnants of Hurricane Jeanne and a 35-minute delay to start the game, the Bullets (5-2, 2-0 CC) controlled play from whistle to whistle to record their fourth shutout of the 2004 campaign.

Meredith Shifman recorded five saves for the Blue Jays (2-6, 0-1 CC), who suffered their first loss to Gettysburg in Baltimore since 1997.

With the wind at her team’s back, Downey notched her fifth goal of the season 14:56 in the contest, taking a pass from Meg Goddu (Chadds Ford, PA/Camp Hill).

Ten minutes in the second half, Bridget Seidel (Mohnton, PA/Governor Mifflin) made it 2-0, finding the backboard on a rebound off a Goddu shot.

In the 57th minute, Downey notched her second goal of the game on a rebound.

Johns Hopkins’ best scoring opportunity came in the 60th minute when Morgan Cromwell (Caton, CT/Canton) made a defensive save on a shot by Amy Soergel.
