ONEONTA, N.Y. – Freshman Laura Burnett-Kurie scored her first collegiate goal to put William Smith past Gettysburg, 2-1, in its season opener today in women's soccer action at the Red Dragon Cup tournament hosted by Oneonta State.
Burnett-Kurie scored the game winning goal unassisted in the 71st minute after beating a Bullet defender. The Herons' Courtney Peters opened up the scoring in the first half off a pass from Debbie Minarick on a corner kick.
Freshman Colleen Stuart (Centennial, CO/Arapahoe) scored her first collegiate and the game-tying goal just under ten minutes into the second stanza. Stuart led the team with all three of her shots taken on goal.
Gettysburg edged William Smith in shots taken, 9-8, while the Herons had a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks.
In goal, Kristin Short (Massapequa, NY/St. Anthony's) gathered three saves and Nikki Dudley tallied seven saves for the Herons.
Gettysburg will return to Red Dragon Cup action tomorrow against Ohio Wesleyan. Game time is 12 p.m.
