HUNTINGDON, Pa. – Jessica Cortese (Lancaster, PA/Hempfield) notched 42 kills in four matches on the weekend to lead Gettysburg to a 2-2 record at the season-opening ASICS Collegiate Invitational at Juniata on Friday and Saturday.
On Saturday, the Bullets defeated Frostburg 3-1 (32-30, 30-25, 24-30, 31-29) before falling to the host Eagles, 3-0 (30-26, 30-22, 30-23).
In Saturday's opening match against Bobcats (1-3), Nicole Barr (Annapolis, MD/Broadneck) notched a team-high 15 kills and added 18 digs for her first double-double of the season. Cortese also had her first double-double with 14 kills and 13 digs. Barr also added five block assists while Cortese tallied two block solos in the four-game set.
Erin Barkdoll (Dover, PA/Dover) added 11 kills and three blocks while Erica Rau (Oakland Park, FL/Pine Crest) had eight kills and six total blocks. Shannan Smith (Milmont Park, PA/Ridley) contributed to the offense with 48 assists.
Defensively, sophomore libero Steph Vial (Hanover, PA/Delone Catholic) tallied a team-high 22 digs but also added a team-best three aces. Smith and Margaret Hallahan (Huntingdon, PA/Huntingdon) contributed 10 digs apiece.
Katie Heffner (Easton, PA/Easton) continued her strong play as a rookie with four blocks.
Against Juniata (3-1), Cortese and Rau led the offense with eight kills each while Barr and Barkdoll notched five and six, respectively. Smith had 26 assists.
Vial once again steadied the defense with 21 digs while Barr, Cortese and Hallahan all added 11 digs apiece. Barkdoll and Heffner added two block assists each.
In Friday's 3-0 loss to No. 8 Wittenberg (4-0), Cortese led the attack with six kills while Rau and Barr added five apiece. Smith put up 19 assists and Barr and Rau added an ace each for the Bullets. Vial steadied the defense with nine digs, and Heffner had the only block of the match.
In the sweep of Waynesburg (0-4), Cortese notched 14 kills to lead the offense. Barr and Barkdoll chipped in with 12 and 11 kills, respectively, while Smith has 32 set assists and a pair of aces.
Rau had three aces and three blocks. Hallahan tallied a team-high 12 digs, and Vial added 11. Heffner and Cortese had three block solos apiece while Barkdoll added two block assists.
For her play over the weekend, Barr was named to the all-tournament team.
Gettysburg returns to action at home in the Battlefield Classic on Friday. The Bullets take on Gwynedd-Mercy at 5 p.m. and Eastern Mennonite at 7 p.m.
