Mifflin) scored twice within a 51-second span to
propel Gettysburg to a 6-0 win in non-conference field hockey action
at Elizabethtown
on Wednesday.
Seidel and Maura
Downey (Lancaster, PA/Lancaster Catholic)
paced the Bullets (2-0) with two goals apiece.
The Gettysburg defense
held the Blue Jays (1-2) to just two shots – both by
Mel Slessinger
– and freshman goalkeeper Katherine
Corkhill (Paoli, PA/Academy of Notre Dame) posted
her first collegiate shutout.
Despite controlling play
for the first 20 minutes of the game, the Bullets were unable
to capitalize until Seidel took a pass from Kelley Mishler (Moorestown,
NJ/Moorestown)
off a penalty corner and slipped it by the keeper.
At 21:39, Seidel made it
2-0 when she broke down the middle of the field and found
the backboard for her second score and the first multi-goal
game of her career.
With 9:41 to go before
halftime, Downey collected
a ball from Becky
Latta (West Chester, PA/Henderson) in front of the cage to give Gettysburg a 3-0 advantage.
Eleven minutes into the
second half, Morgan Cromwell (Canton, CT/Canton)
converted a penalty stroke for her first collegiate goal.
Downey
made it 5-0 when she collected a pass from Meg
Goddu (Chadds Ford, PA/Unionville)
at the 51:40 mark.
A minute and 11 seconds
later, Goddu notched her first goal of the season when she
tallied unassisted for the final margin.
For the game, the Bullets
outshot Elizabethtown 16-2 and held a 9-3 advantage
in penalty corners. Corkhill made two saves in the shutout
victory.
The shutout marks the first
time Gettysburg has blanked the Blue Jays since 1992,
a 2-0 win at home. It is the Bullet largest margin of victory
since the second meeting between the two teams – a
9-0 tally in 1954 at Elizabethtown.
Gettysburg returns to action in its home opener against
Rowan on Saturday. Game time is 1 p.m.
