GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Freshman John Leech led three falls with a 2-minute, 6-second pin at 133 to help visiting Oneonta State defeat Gettysburg 34-9 in non-conference wrestling action on Monday.
The 26th-ranked Red Dragons (9-2) opened up a 27-0 lead in the match to secure their sixth straight victory.
Freshman Matt Shank (Reedsville, PA/Indian Valley) led the Bullets (0-3) with a 4-minute, 16-second pin at 141 to get Gettysburg, which starts a season 0-3 for the first time since 1998-99, on the board.
Kyle Hauptfleisch opened the match with a 3-2 defensive victory at 174.
Casmir Niedzielski (184) and Nick Castellano (197) quickly pushed the lead to 15-0 with pins in 2:07 and 2:31, respectively.
Mike Pattanite (Tabernacle, NJ/Holy Cross) battled Billy Cooper to a sudden-victory period, but Cooper prevailed with the only offensive points of the bout to win, 4-2.
After Josh Cuomo made it 21-0 with a 7-1 decision win at 125, Leech notched the third pin of the night to give Oneonta the cushion it would need for its second win in as many meetings with Gettysburg.
Shank broke up the shutout with his team-leading sixth pin of the season. The rookie, who grabbed his 20th win of the season, came back from being down 7-1 in the match to take an 11-7 lead before the final takedown in the second period.
Caleb Seufert (Gaithersburg, MD/Northwest) tallied the only other Bullet win of the match with a 12-5 decision at 149.
Ryan Higgins (157) added a 9-2 win, and Dustin Winn (165) rounded out competition with an 8-0 major decision victory.
Gettysburg returns to action on Wednesday in a quad match at King's with Olivet and Plymouth State. Action begins at 4 p.m.
