WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – Freshman Matt Shank (Reedsville, PA/Indian Valley) notched two pins, both in 1 minute, 41 seconds at 141 to lead Gettysburg to a split in non-conference wrestling action on Wednesday at King's College.
The Bullets (1-4) opened the day with a 31-12 loss to the host Monarchs (4-6) before defeating Plymouth State (2-9), 22-17.
In the opening match against King's, Ryan Richard (125) recorded a 4-minute, 14-second pin and John Houssck (133) collected a forfeit victory to open up a 12-0 lead for the Monarchs.
Shank grabbed his seventh pin of the season to cut the deficit in half.
Adam Penberthy (149) won by decision 5-2, Drew Dehaut (157) tallied a major decision victory 14-5, and Joe Arnone (165) won by fall in 41 seconds to put the match out of reach at 25-6.
Zach Dietrick (174) and Ryan Mardon (184) tacked on decision wins 8-7 and 3-1, respectively, to open up a 31-6 edge before Jeff Morgan (Reston, VA/Langley) and Mike Pattanite (Tabernacle, NJ/Holy Cross) won by decision for the final margin.
Morgan took a 2-1 overtime victory at 197, and Pattanite won 3-2 at heavyweight.
Against the Panthers, Morgan and Pattanite each recorded a second victory on the day to turn a 17-16 deficit into a 22-17 win.
Morgan put the Bullets ahead by two with a 7-2 victory, and Pattanite preserved the lead, winning by a 3-2 margin.
Kevin Dougherty (Gloucester, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) picked up his initial win of the season, opening the match with a 12-8 win at 125.
Dave Preciado (133) gave Plymouth State a 6-3 advantage with a forfeit win before Shank put Gettysburg back in front with his second pin of the day.
Caleb Seufert (Gaithersburg, MD/Northwest) pushed the lead to 13-6 with a 15-3 major decision win at 149.
Dan Moskowitz (157) and Brandon Black (165) cut the Panther deficit to 13-12 with decision victories, 13-8 and 7-6, respectively.
Daniel Donnelly (Garden City, NY/Garden City) made it 16-12 with a 10-4 win at 174, but Nate Kittredge won by technical fall 23-7 at 184 to swing the advantage to PSU.
Gettysburg returns to action on Saturday at the Brute-Adidas Invitational at Ursinus. Action begins at 10 a.m.
