Glaser, Whelan lead Gettysburg to comeback win over Haverford

Box Score

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – David Glaser (West Chester, PA/Malvern Prep) and Matt Whelan (Ridgefield, CT/Ridgefield/Worecester [MA]) combined for 37 points, leading Gettysburg to a 66-56 come-from-behind win against Haverford in Centennial Conference (CC) men’s basketball action on Thursday.

Glaser posted his third double-double of the season with a game-high 21 points and 12 rebounds, helping the Bullets (7-6, 4-2 CC) battle back from a seven-point second-half deficit for their eighth straight win against the Fords (3-8, 2-4 CC). The CC’s field goal percentage leader entering contest, Glaser was held to 5-of-12 shooting from the floor, but compensated with a 10-for-10 showing from the free throw line.

Whelan poured in a season-high 16 points, putting Gettysburg ahead to stay on a 3-point play with 4:52 remaining. The junior guard went 5-for-5 from the line down the stretch, part of a 14-for-15 Bullet showing at the stripe in the game’s final five minutes.

Johnny Elefterakis led Haverford with 17 points, draining five of the Fords’ nine 3-pointers. Jeremy Bass added 11 points and a team-high seven rebounds.

After trailing most of the way, Gettysburg used a late burst to capture its third straight win and improve to 18-1 all-time against the Fords.

Three free throws by Mike Kelly gave Haverford a 50-46 lead with 6:19 before Todd Brady (Hancock, NH/ConVal) finished a baseline drive for two of his nine points, cutting the deficit in half. Jason Polykoff hit the second of two free throws to make it 51-48, but Whelan was fouled while scoring down the lane and hit the ensuing free throw to knot the game at 51.

Glaser stole the ball from Matt Stein on the Fords’ next trip, leading to an intentional foul and a crucial four-point Bullet possession. Glaser hit both free throws to put Gettysburg ahead for the first time since the game’s opening minutes, and Whelan finished another layup for a 55-51 lead.

Following a missed 3-pointer, Kyle Jakobe (Baltimore, MD/McDonogh/Peddie [NJ]) made two free throws, pushing the lead to six with 3:51 remaining.

Elefterakis cut the deficit to 59-56 with a layup, but Haverford was unable to pull even on its next possession and Gettysburg drained 7 of 8 free throws in the final 64 seconds to seal the win.

The Bullets blitzed to a 12-3 lead in the game’s first four minutes, but Elefterakis nailed four 3-pointers in a 17-0 run that gave his squad a 20-12 lead. Gettysburg trailed the rest of the half, pulling even at 29 on a pair of Glaser free throws with 1:12 remaining.

Bass scooped in a layup as time expired for a 31-29 halftime lead and the Fords built a 44-37 advantage with 12:24 remaining.

In addition to his points and rebounds, Glaser dished out four assists and blocked three shots. Jakobe finished with eight points.

Haverford leading scorer Mark Gabriel, coming off a career-high 34-point effort against Johns Hopkins on Tuesday, was held to 10 points on 3-of-7 shooting and four rebounds.

The Bullets return to action on Saturday at Swarthmore. Game time is 4 p.m.
