SWARTHMORE, Pa. – David Glaser (West
Chester, PA/Malvern Prep) scored a game-high 16 points and added nine
rebounds to lift Gettysburg to a 57-51 victory at Swarthmore in Centennial Conference
(CC) men’s basketball action on Saturday. Glaser
hit 7 of 14 shots from the floor and matched a career best with four blocked shots
to lead the Bullets (8-6, 5-2 CC) to their fourth straight victory. Matt
Whelan (Ridgefield, CT/Ridgefield/Worcester Acad. [MA]) added 15 points
in the win.
Mark Rhode
led the Garnet (2-12, 1-6 CC) with 11 points while Ian McCormick
and Dillon McGrew chipped in 10 apiece.
With his team trailing 6-5, Glaser hit a layup at the 16:24
mark to spark a 6-2 burst and put Gettysburg ahead to stay. Whelan capped the
run with a steal-and-basket combination at the 14:04 mark.
After Whelan drilled his second 3-pointer of the game with
10:41 to play in the opening half to push the advantage to 16-10, Swarthmore responded
with the next four points to pull within two.
Brian
Sateja (Morristown, NJ/Delbarton School), Glaser and Kyle McGlensey
(West Chester, PA/West Chester East) answered with six straight points
to push the lead back to eight.
Kyle
Jakobe (Baltimore, MD/McDonogh/Peddie [NJ]) nailed a triple just before
the halftime horn to give the Bullets their largest lead of the first half, 35-25.
The Garnet opened the second half with seven of the first
nine points to cut the deficit to 37-32.
Mike
Spadafora (Richboro, PA/Archbishop Wood) hit his only field goal of the
contest and Whelan followed with a trey to spark a 9-0 run over a 3-minute, 31-second
span to open a 14-point advantage.
Ryan
Page (Laurel, MD/St. John’s College [DC]) gave Gettysburg a 52-38 lead
with 11:17 left.
The Bullets
went the next 8 minutes, 17 seconds without scoring, allowing the Garnet to close
the gap to 52-45 before Glaser hit a layup at the 3:00 mark.
Matt Gustafson, the CC’s leading scorer
who was held to nine points on the night, hit a trey with 28.8 seconds remaining
to close the gap to 54-49, but Page connected on 3 of 4 free throws down the stretch
to seal the win.
The Bullets
return to action on Wednesday at Ursinus. Game time is 8 p.m.
