SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Radiance Walters
posted a double-double to lead Swarthmore past Gettysburg 63-51 in Centennial
Conference (CC) women’s basketball action on Saturday.
Walters, the conference’s second-leading rebounder (10.7
rpg), hauled in 15 boards and added 10 points, including a free throw to start
a 15-4 run that broke open a tie game early in the second half. Kristen
Lee led four Garnet players in double figures with 13 points as Swarthmore
(7-6, 4-4 CC) won for the fifth time in its last seven meetings with the Bullets
(8-6, 5-3 CC).
Elizabeth
Ross (Chestertown, MD/St. Andrew’s [DE]) posted her eighth double-double
of the season with team highs of 14 points and 11 rebounds for Gettysburg, which
shot only 20-for-60 (33.3 percent) from the field. Kathryn Reilly (Ridgewood,
NJ/Ridgewood) also reached double figures for the sixth time in her last
seven games with 12 points.
Following
a tight first half, the Garnet took control with a decisive stretch through the
middle of the second period.
A
Ross field goal gave the Bullets their final lead at 33-31 with 18:39 remaining
before Lee and Alison Wolff nailed back-to-back buckets for the
Garnet. Katie Eiden (Silver Spring, MD/Georgetown Visitation) scored
to tie the game at 35, but Walters hit 1 of 2 free throws to put the hosts ahead
to stay and touch off a 15-4 run.
Wolff,
who finished with 11 points, converted a 3-point play to push the lead to 39-35.
Gettysburg’s Megan Hartman (Lewistown, PA/Indian Valley) hit two
free throws to cut the deficit in half, but the Bullets would get no closer.
Three straight field goals by Karen Berk
increased the Swarthmore advantage to eight and a 3-pointer from Jennifer
Stevenson made it 48-39. Lee capped the run with another bucket to give
the Garnet their first double-digit lead of the game with 9:39 remaining.
From there, Swarthmore displayed the defense that leads
the CC in points allowed per game (49.1) and opponents’ field goal percentage
(.329), leading by no fewer than eight points the rest of the way.
The day started promisingly for Gettysburg, which built
an early 15-10 lead on six points from Reilly. Three-pointers by Jessica
Fuhr and Stevenson erased that advantage, but the Bullets remained on
top at 29-28 thanks to a Ross field goal with 1:15 left.
Lee, however, knocked down another trey to make it 31-29 in favor
of Swarthmore at the half.
Debra
Farrelly also keyed the Garnet victory with nine points to go along with
a team-high four assists and three steals.
Eiden
finished with eight points while Hartman added seven. In her first game since
reaching the 1,000-point mark, CC leading scorer Jen Bengel (Timonium, MD/Roland
Park Country School) was held to four points, but did collect nine rebounds
and hand out a team-high four assists.
