COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Freshman Matt Shank (Reedsville, PA/Indian Valley) finished second in the 141-pound weight class to lead Gettysburg to an eighth-place showing at the 2005 Brute-Adidas wrestling tournament at Ursinus on Saturday.
The Bullets finished with 31.5 team points, two and a half behind sixth place NYU. Urinus won the invitational with 114 points.
Mike Pattanite (Tabernacle, NJ/Holy Cross) was the only other placewinner for Gettysburg, finishing fourth at heavyweight.
Shank opened his day with a 6-0 decision win over Rich Bloom (Roger Williams) before tallying a 9-2 victory over Ursinus' Sean Donahoe.
In the championship bout, Gene Kobilansky (NYU) edge out a 6-5 decision for the title.
Pattanite's day opened with a 7-4 win over Willie Katinowsky (Ursinus) before being pinned by eventual champion Ben Vaught (Baptist Bible College) in 1 minute, 28 seconds.
In his lone bout in the consolation bracket, Pattanite was pinned by Wilkes' Matt Carey in 27 seconds to place fourth.
Daniel Donnelly (Garden City, NY/Garden City) (174) and John Leinberger (Great Falls, VA/Langley) (184) each finished one bout shy of the third-place match.
Donnelly fell in first match 9-8 before wrestling his way back with a pin and two major decisions. He pinned Seth Hague in 3:33 before back-to-back 19-7 and 9-0 wins. His day ended with a 4-2 loss to Kyle Lenio (Wilkes).
Leinberger won by decision 8-5 and by fall in 5:57 before being pinned by eventual champion Mike Troutman (Ursinus) in 42 seconds.
Leinberger also lost his only bout in the consolation bracket, 9-8.
Gettysburg returns to action on Tuesday at home against Elizabethtown. Match time is 7 p.m.
