DeBorger, Rojas lead Catholic past Gettysburg, 65-49

Box Score

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Jackie DeBorger scored a game-high 18 points, Maria Rojas did everything else and Catholic built a 22-point halftime lead en route to a 65-49 win over Gettysburg in non-conference women’s basketball action on Monday.

DeBorger netted 12 first-half points as the Cardinals (8-6) took a 41-19 lead into the locker room in their first meeting with the Bullets (8-7) since 1997. Rojas came within two points and two assistsof a triple-double, compiling eight points, 12 rebounds and eight assists. The sophomore guard also picked up five of Catholic’s 10 steals for good measure.

Gettysburg freshman Megan Hartman (Lewistown, PA/Indian Valley), Rojas’ sparring partner most of the evening, also approached triple-double territory, finishing with 10 points, seven rebounds and seven steals. Jen Bengel (Timonium, MD/Roland Park Country School) led the Bullets with 12 points.

With Rojas running the show and DeBorger finding the basket, the Cardinals took charge with a commanding first-half performance.

Trailing in the opening minutes, Catholic went ahead to stay at 6-5 when Rojas found Laura Kaye for a jumper at the 17:29 mark, touching off a 14-2 run. DeBorger added a pair of field goals during the stretch, the latter giving the Cardinals an 18-7 lead. Gettysburg managed only one field goal on seven attempts and committed four turnovers over the same span.

The Bullets stayed within 22-12 on a jumper from Amy Tarbell (East Greenwich, RI/East Greenwich), but Catholic responded with a 13-3 run that doubled its 10-point lead. Rojas hit her only field goal of the game and dished out two assists during the run.

A 3-pointer by DeBorger made it 40-17 with 1:24 left in the half, the Cardinals’ largest lead of the night.

After shooting 5-for-26 in the first half, Gettysburg whittled the deficit to 53-43 on a 3-pointer by Bengel with 9:14 remaining. Two buckets from DeBorger and two Rojas free throws, however, pushed the Catholic lead back to 16 and the Cardinal defense held the Bullets to four points in the final four-and-a-half minutes.

In 26 minutes off the Gettysburg bench, Hartman set career highs for points, rebounds and steals. She hit 4 of 7 shots from the field and also handed out two assists.

Elizabeth Ross (Chestertown, MD/St. Andrew’s [DE]) added nine points, six rebounds and four assists.

Gloria Schnepp collected nine points and six rebounds for Catholic, which snapped a six-game losing streak to the Bullets. The Cardinals’ last win in the series was a 71-60 decision during the 1989-90 season.

Gettysburg, which finished 3-4 against non-conference opponents in 2004-05, returns to Centennial Conference action on Saturday at home against Bryn Mawr. Game time is 4 p.m.
