YORK, Pa. – Freshman Matt Shank (Reedsville, PA/Indian Valley) won all three of his bouts to lift his record to 28-5 and lead Gettysburg to a 2-1 day in a quad match at York in non-conference wrestling action on Saturday.
The Bullets (4-5) defeated Albright 37-15 and won a close match against Messiah 24-23 before falling to the host Spartans, 40-3.
With the first two wins, Gettysburg won four straight matches for the first time since the 1997-98 season when the Bullets defeated five conference foes in a row. It also marked the first victory for Gettysburg over the Falcons (6-5) since a 22-21 victory on Jan. 27, 2001, and only the second win in the last 11 meetings.
At 174 in the opening match against the Lions (2-7), Daniel Donnelly (Garden City, NY/Garden City) pinned Paul LaPlaca in 1 minute, 25 seconds to give the Bullets the lead for good at 10-9.
John Leinberger (Great Falls, VA/Langley), Jeff Morgan (Reston, VA/Langley) and Mike Pattanite (Tabernacle, NJ/Holy Cross) pushed the lead to 28-9 and out of reach with forfeits wins.
Kevin Dougherty (Gloucester, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) added a 9-3 decision victory at 125 and Shank won by fall in 1:40 at 141.
Wade Ginter took a forfeit win at 133 for Albright to set the final margin.
Earlier in the match, Pat Murray (149) opened with a forfeit victory and Ezra Montesino (165) won by decision 5-3 to give the Lions an early 9-4 advantage.
Tom Fives (Pittsburgh, PA/North Allegheny) got Gettysburg on the board with an 8-0 major decision at 157.
In the highlight match of the day against Messiah, Shank – wrestling up at 149 for the first time this season – pinned Kevin Gill in 6 minutes, 35 seconds for his team-leading 10th fall of the season.
Fives backed that up with a 5-4 win at 157 to stake the Bullets to a 9-0 lead.
Derek Ricker got the Falcons on the board with a 1-minute, 28-second pin to pull within 9-6.
Donnelly made it a 12-6 lead with a 7-2 victory at 174 before Tim Pentz answered with a 4-minute, 56-second pin to knot the match at 12.
Morgan (197) and Pattanite (285) responded with a 4-2 and 5-2 win, respectively, to push the advantage to 18-12.
A Josh Cragg 18-2 technical fall victory at 125 pulled the Falcons to within one, but Ray Cottiers (New Milford, NJ/New Milford) – in his lone action of the day – won by pin in 3:50 to secure the win.
Matt Gorkos (141) won by forfeit to set the final score.
Against York (13-4), the Spartans completed a 3-0 day, winning the first nine matches to open up a 40-0 lead en route to the 40-3 victory.
Shank broke up the shutout with an 8-2 win in the final bout of the day.
Gettysburg returns to action on Tuesday at home against Centennial Conference-foe Johns Hopkins. Match time is 7 p.m.
