Box Score
GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Ice-cold in the first
half, Gettysburg hit nearly every shot it took after halftime to run away with
an 80-50 win over McDaniel in Centennial Conference (CC) men’s basketball action
on Sunday. Mike Spadafora
(Richboro, PA/Archbishop Wood) and Kyle Jakobe (Baltimore, MD/McDonogh/Peddie
[NJ]) scored 21 of their combined 26 points in the second half, helping
the Bullets (10-6, 7-2 CC) go 17-for-21 from the floor after the break en route
to their sixth straight win. Spadafora and Jakobe each finished with a team-high
13 points.
David Glaser
(West Chester, PA/Malvern Prep) added 12 points while Ryan Page
(Laurel, MD/St. John’s College [MD]) also hit double digits for 11 as
Gettysburg ran its winning streak to 11 straight games against the Green Terror
(3-13, 1-8 CC). Glaser and Page each collected a team-best six rebounds.
McDaniel’s Sam Anstead scored all of his
team-high 11 points in the first half, keeping the Green Terror deadlocked with
Gettysburg at 27 through the first half.
After
hitting 9 of 27 shots in the opening half, the Bullets erupted for 53 points over
the final 20 minutes to leave no doubt.
Glaser
put the home team ahead to stay with a pair of free throws in the first 35 seconds
of the second half and Spadafora followed with a 3-pointer to make it 32-27. Jemar
Daniel answered with a leaning layup and Mike DiPiero hit
1 of 2 free throws to pull McDaniel within 32-30.
With foul trouble consigning starting power forward Erik
Fromm (Swedesboro, NJ/Kingsway Regional) and backup Chris Pombar
(Glen Head, NY/North Shore) to the bench, Gettysburg got a lift from sophomore
reserve Julius Redd (Gaithersburg, MD/Magruder).
Entering after Pombar’s third foul at 17:36, Redd drew
a foul on Daniel, hit the back end of two free throws, then hauled in a defensive
rebound to set up a 3-point play chance by Spadafora. The sophomore missed the
ensuing free throw, but collected his own rebound and converted a wide-open layup
to make it 37-30.
Following
a Green Terror timeout and turnover, Redd kept the Bullets’ next possession alive
with an offensive rebound, then zipped a pass to Spadafora for another layup and
Gettysburg’s largest lead up to that point.
Jakobe
followed with two free throws and a 3-pointer. Glaser capped the 14-0 burst with
two free throws, extending the lead to 46-30 with 12:45 left.
Kyle O’Connor ended a 5-minute, 38-second
McDaniel scoring drought with a 3-pointer, but two treys from Page sparked a 13-0
Bullet run that made it 59-33. Mike Beck (Clearwater, FL/Clearwater)
scored a career-high eight points in four minutes to wrap up the win.
Gettysburg built an 18-10 lead through the game’s opening
12 minutes before Anstead keyed a 10-0 Green Terror run that put the visitors
ahead for the only time at 20-18. Bullet guard Matt Whelan (Ridgefield,
CT/Ridgefield/Worcester Acad. [MA]) responded with six of his nine points
in a 9-2 run that gave his squad a 27-22 advantage.
McDaniel tallied the next five points, tying the game for
the third and final time on a D.J. Hynes free throw with 22.9 seconds
left in the half.
Gettysburg went 6-for-9 from 3-point
range in the second half, finishing with eight threes.
With
his one blocked shot on the day, Glaser became the program's all-time career leader
in that category, finishing with 83. Glaser entered the game tied with John Griffin
(82 from 1991-94) for the program lead.
The Bullets
return to action on Wednesday at Dickinson. Game time is 8 p.m.
