Gettysburg takes sole possession of first place with 68-56 win at Dickinson

Box Score

CARLISLE, Pa. – Thanks to a near-perfect night from Mike Spadafora (Richboro, PA/Archbishop Wood) and some help from Franklin & Marshall, Gettysburg is all alone atop the Centennial Conference (CC).

Spadafora hit all eight shots from the floor and 2 of 3 free throws en route to a game-high 21 points, leading the Bullets over Dickinson 68-56 in CC men’s basketball action on Wednesday. The win, coupled with the Diplomats’ 64-59 win at Johns Hopkins, left Gettysburg (11-6, 8-2 CC) alone in first place, one game ahead of F&M and the Blue Jays.

Despite foul trouble that limited leading scorer David Glaser (West Chester, PA/Malvern Prep) to 18 minutes and 10 points, the Bullets opened up a 20-point second-half lead en route to their sixth straight road win and seventh consecutive victory overall.

Matt Whelan (Ridgefield, CT/Ridgefield/Worcester Acad. [MA]) and Kyle Jakobe (Baltimore, MD/McDonogh/Peddie [NJ]) each chipped in with 10 points apiece for Gettysburg, which won for the 12th time in its last 15 meetings with the Red Devils (8-9, 5-5 CC).

Matt Keys led three Dickinson players in double figures with 15 points.

Clutch 3-pointers and the league’s top defense helped the Bullets improve to 5-0 on the road in conference play.

Down 16-13 midway through the first half, Gettysburg used a 16-3 run to open up a 10-point lead.

Todd Brady (Hancock, NH/ConVal) hit back-to-back baskets to put the Bullets ahead to stay at 17-16 and Glaser followed with a 3-pointer and two free throws. Two Spadafora layups made it 26-18 and Whelan drilled a 3-pointer to cap the run and open up Gettysburg’s first double-digit lead at 29-19 with 4:43 left in the half.

The Red Devils crept within 37-33 on a 3-pointer from Brad Litchfield early in the second half, but would get no closer.

A layup from Spadafora snapped the Bullets’ 2-minute, 53-second scoring drought to start the half and touched off a 12-2 run that extended the lead to 49-35. Glaser contributed five points to the burst.

Travis Doll pulled Dickinson within 53-41 on a layup with 8:11 remaining, but Spadafora and Ryan Page (Laurel, MD/St. John’s College [DC]) contributed five points each to a 12-4 Gettysburg run that made it a 20-point game with 3:49 remaining.

Page finished with eight points, including a pair of 3-pointers and two assists. Jakobe handed out a team-high five assists while Spadafora led the way with seven rebounds.

Keys and Litchfield, who combined for 57 points in the teams’ last meeting – a 74-59 Dickinson victory in the 2003-04 regular-season finale – were held to 26 points on 9-of-21 shooting Wednesday. Litchfield and Doll chipped in with 11 points apiece.

The Bullets return to action on Saturday at Haverford. Game time is 4 p.m.
