Free-throw shooting sinks Gettysburg in conference loss at Dickinson

Box Score

CARLISLE, Pa. – Dickinson’s Megan Shelley sank four of her six free-throw attempts in the game’s final minute to keep Gettysburg at bay and preserve a 57-54 Centennial Conference (CC) women’s basketball victory on Wednesday.

Shelley finished the night with a team-high 15 points for the Red Devils (15-1, 10-1 CC), who ran their program-best winning streak to 11 games.

Jen Bengel (Timonium, MD/Roland Park Country Day School) led the Bullets (9-8, 6-4 CC) with a game-high 20 points on 10-for-21 shooting from the field.

Gettysburg, which entered the night as the CC’s top free-throw shooting team (71 percent), connected on just 4 of 19 attempts from the line, including 2-for-11 in the second half.

After Bengel connected on a jumper with 15:32 remaining in the contest to put the Bullets in front 34-31, Jen Reitmeyer converted both of her free throws to spark a 5-0 burst that put Dickinson ahead by two.

Katie Eiden (Silver Spring, MD/Georgetown Visitation) nailed her only basket of the night with 12:15 remaining to tie the game at 36.

Reitmeyer scored four straight points for the Red Devils to push the advantage to 40-36 with 10:44 to play.

Consecutive jumpers from Bengel and Emily Falk (Boiling Springs, PA/Boiling Springs) once again knotted the game at 40.

After Eiden tied the game for the final time at 44 with Gettysburg’s only two made free throws of the second half, Reitmeyer responded with her fourth bucket of the game.

Carly Onkotz and Patrice Johnson each converted 1 of 2 free throws and Bengel answered with a jumper to keep it a two-point game.

A Jessica Howard steal off a Bullet inbound with 3:30 to play led directly to a Johnson 3-pointer – one of only two made in the game by either team – to stretch the margin to 51-46.

Kathryn Reilly (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) hit a jumper, but Gettysburg missed all four free-throws attempts over the next two minutes to keep it a three-point game.

Despite two baskets from Elizabeth Ross (Chestertown, MD/St. Andrew’s School [DE]) and one from Bengel in the game’s final minute, Shelley’s four free throws coupled with an Allyson Teatom layup gave the Red Devils their second win over the Bullets in the last 18 meetings between the teams.

Bengel and Ross both finished the night with double-doubles for Gettysburg. Ross tallied 10 points and grabbing a season high-tying 15 boards while Bengel added 11 rebounds to her 20 points.

Reitmeyer, connecting on 4 of 6 shots from the floor and 4 of 4 from the free-throw line, finished with 12 points for Dickinson.

Gettysburg returns to action on Saturday at Haverford. Game time is 2 p.m.
