Gettysburg opens Days Inn Tournament with 69-52 win over Albright; Bullets to meet Widener in title game

Box Score

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Jen Bengel (Timonium, MD/Roland Park Country School) led a balanced Gettysburg scoring attack with 15 points, helping the Bullets defeat Albright 69-52 in the first round of the 15th Annual Days Inn Tournament on Friday.

Katie Eiden (Silver Spring, MD/Georgetown Visitation) added 11 of her 13 points in the decisive first half as Gettysburg (6-4) raced to a 44-20 halftime lead thanks to 59-percent shooting from the floor. Emily Falk (Boiling Springs, PA/Boiling Springs) and Kathryn Reilly (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) also keyed the first-half onslaught, combining for 17 of their 22 points in the opening 20 minutes.

The Bullets will face Widener for the tournament championship on Saturday at 6 p.m. The Pioneers rolled past Washington (Md.) 77-55 in the night’s opening game. Gettysburg is seeking its first outright Days Inn championship since 2001.

Meredith Berger paced the Lady Lions (2-10) with 15 points while Staci Waligorski added 13 in the losing effort. Jacqueline Hardwick chipped in with nine points and a team-high nine rebounds.

After falling behind 2-1 in the opening 62 seconds, the Bullets went on a 20-1 run and never looked back.

Reilly hit a jumper to make it 3-2, Bengel scored off the first of three Elizabeth Ross (Chestertown, MD/St. Andrew’s [DE]) assists and Falk converted two free throws. After a Reilly layup, Jamie Marshall (Pottsville, PA/Nativity B.V.M.) drained a 3-pointer for a 12-2 Gettysburg lead.

Hardwick converted the second of two free throws to halt Albright’s 3-minute, 40-second scoring drought before Reilly took command.

The sophomore fed Bengel on a short jumper, blocked a Hardwick shot on the Lady Lions’ next possession, put back a missed 3-pointer by Falk and stuck another jumper to make it 18-3. Eiden followed with a 3-pointer to cap the run.

A jumper by Sabrina Perry pulled Albright within 23-13 with 7:50 left in the first half, but the Bullets responded with a 15-2 stretch over the next 3 minutes, 57 seconds and took a 44-20 lead into the break. A Bengel bucket with 15:35 left gave Gettysburg its largest lead of the night at 52-23.

Falk finished with 12 points on the night while Reilly contributed 10 points, six rebounds and four assists in 20 minutes of action. Ross, averaging a team-best 11.0 rebounds per game in 2004-05, led the way again on Friday with 10 boards.

The Bullets did much of their damage inside, striking for 34 points in the paint. Gettysburg also cashed in 24 points off of 21 Albright turnovers.

The Lady Lions will face Washington in the tournament’s consolation game at 4 p.m.
