Gemberling-Johnson, Forster lead Bullets past Ursinus, 5-1

Box Score

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Jesse Gemberling-Johnson (Wyndmoor, PA/Christopher Dock) and Ian Forster (Doylestown, PA/Central Bucks West) combined for three goals and two assists to lead Gettysburg over Ursinus 5-1 in Centennial Conference (CC) men’s soccer action on Saturday.

Gemberling-Johnson, who entered the game with a team-high 24 shots, tallied the Bullets’ first goal in each half, his first two markers in a Gettysburg uniform. The sophomore transferred from Eastern before the 2005 campaign.

Forster had a hand in all three second-half goals, setting up Gemberling-Johnson and Mike Tirney (Springfield, PA/Springfield), then netting his first collegiate goal to wrap up scoring.

The Bullets (5-3-2, 2-1-1 CC) needed fewer than seven minutes to go ahead for good. A cross by Garrett Bruno (Harrisburg, PA/Susquehanna Twp.) was headed out of the box right to the feet of Gemberling-Johnson, whose 26th shot of the year hit the back of the net for a 1-0 lead.

Chris Bayon (Langhorne, PA/Lawrenceville [NJ]) forced a Bear own goal that made it 2-0 when his cross from the right of the net was played in by an Ursinus defender in the 18th minute.

The Bears (2-7, 0-4 CC) pulled within a goal on Jon Herting’s 50-yard bomb at 22:00, but the second half was all Gettysburg.

Gemberling-Johnson took a through ball from Forster in stride and scored at 58:39 to restore the Bullets’ two-goal edge. A similar play, this time from Forster to Tirney at 63:46, pushed the lead to 4-1.

After the two helpers, Forster got in the goal column himself, burying a slip header from Pat Brown (Far Hills, NJ/Ridge) in the 72nd minute.
Gettysburg’s five goals was the team’s highest single-game total since a 5-0 win over Haverford on Sept. 18, 2004.

Herting, Donald Reilly and Tyler Johnson recorded shots for Ursinus, which fell to 1-12 all-time against the Bullets in conference play. Brian Berkowitz made five saves before giving way to Ed de Gottal for the final 20:15.

Gettysburg returns to action on Tuesday at home against Messiah. Game time is 7 p.m.
