GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Lauren Thul (Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central) led three players in double digits with 15 kills and added five blocks to as Gettysburg defeated Muhlenberg 3-1 in Centennial Conference (CC) volleyball action on Tuesday.
Hillary Prutzman (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) added 12 kills and Katie Heffner (Easton, PA/Easton) added 11 for the Bullets, who improved to 21-1 all-time against the Mules. Shannan Smith (Milmont Park, PA/Ridley) put up 48 assists to go along with 16 digs and six kills in the win.
With the match tied at one game apiece, Gettysburg (13-9, 6-2 CC) posted 30-25 and 30-24 scores in games three and four, respectively, to claim the victory.
In the third game, kills from Prutzman and Jayme Massey (Springfield, PA/Merion Mercy Acad.) staked the Bullets to a quick 6-1 lead.
Back-to-back service aces by Mary Henning pulled the Mules within 10-8, but Gettysburg ran off seven of the next eight points to build a 17-9 lead. Erica Rau (Oakland Park, FL/Pine Crest) recorded two of her eight kills during the run.
Thul's best stretch of the night came after two kills by Julie Lauro cut the lead to 20-14. Thul drilled two kills off block attempts, knocked a third down the middle of the defensive zone, then teamed with Prutzman on a block that made it 24-14. Following a Muhlenberg timeout, Thul struck for another kill and the Bullets were on their way to a 2-1 lead.
The Mules (10-10, 2-4 CC) started game four with five straight points, but Gettysburg rallied to take a 13-11 lead, going ahead to stay with a 7-1 burst that snapped an 18-all tie. Rau's third service ace of the match made it 29-24 and a Muhlenberg service error ended the night.
Powered by 15 kills, the Bullets stormed to a 30-11 victory in game one. The Mules, however, responded by hanging around in game two, then notching the final five points to claim a 30-28 win.
Steph Vial (Hanover, PA/Delone Catholic) finished with a team-high 24 digs for Gettysburg. Massey added eight kills and 10 digs.
The Bullets return to action on Tuesday at home against Swarthmore. Match time is 7 p.m.
