Downey’s OT goal lifts Gettysburg over McDaniel, 2-1

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Maura Downey (Lancaster, PA/Lancaster Catholic) scored the game-winning goal midway through the first overtime period to propel 15th-ranked Gettysburg over McDaniel 2-1 in Centennial Conference (CC) field hockey action on Wednesday.

 The Bullets (12-3, 8-0 CC) ran their winning streak to eight games while remaining unbeaten in conference play. With the win, Gettysburg clinched a first-round bye in the CC playoffs and can host the tournament with a win at Ursinus on Saturday.

 Gettysburg’s offense dominated the first half with eight corners and nine shots, including a goal off a penalty corner by Bridget Seidel (Mohnton, PA/Governor Mifflin) 32 minutes into the game. The goal, her seventh of the season, was assisted by Becky Latta (West Chester, PA/Henderson).

 McDaniel mounted an offensive attack with nine shots in the second half and tied the game on a penalty stroke goal by Carolanne Bianco with 9:44 left in regulation. However, Gettysburg goalkeeper Katherine Corkhill (Paoli, PA/Acad. of Notre Dame) made four saves in the second half including two in the final minutes of regulation to send the game to overtime. She added one save in extra frame.

 With 4:42 left before a second overtime, Downey’s fourth goal of the year gave Gettysburg the victory.

 Jamie Nash and Dani Unflat each took three of the Green Terror’s 10 shots while Erika Wawzyanick played a solid game in net with 11 saves.

 Meg Goddu (Chadds Ford, PA/Unionville), the CC’s leading scorer, took seven shots on goal for the Bullets. Seidel finished the game with five shots on goal.

 Gettysburg returns to action on Saturday at Ursinus. Game time is 12 p.m.
