Big first half propels Ursinus to key conference win over Gettysburg

Box Score

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Lindsay Cappa scored the first two goals to stake Ursinus to a 2-0 lead in the first 24 minutes en route to a 4-0 win for the No. 2 Bears over visiting 15th-ranked Gettysburg in Centennial Conference (CC) field hockey action on Saturday.

In a battle for first place in the conference, Ursinus (13-2, 8-0 CC) jumped on the board in the game’s fourth minute and never looked back to gain the upper hand for the top spot and hosting rights in the CC tournament on Nov. 5-6.

The Bears would host the conference playoffs with a win in either of their last two CC games.

Katherine Corkhill (Paoli, PA/Acad. of Notre Dame) made 12 saves in goal for the Bullets (12-4, 8-1 CC), who suffered their first conference loss of the season and had an eight-game winning streak come to an end.

Cappa knocked home a pass from Molly Stevens at the 3:11 mark before striking again in the 24th minute, this time off a Kait Sutherland assist, for her team-leading 13th marker of the season.

Karen Wendler tallied unassisted with 4 minutes, 15 seconds remaining before the intermission to stretch the advantage to 3-0. Two minutes into the second stanza, Sutherland notched her fifth goal of the season to set the final margin.

After being held without a shot in the first half, Gettysburg had a number of chances to get on the scoreboard after the break. Maura Downey (Lancaster, PA/Lancaster Catholic) was stopped on a 2-on-1 break with Meg Goddu (Chadds Ford, PA/Unionville) with just under 20 minutes left.

Downey and Becky Latta (West Chester, PA/Henderson) each had shots turned aside in the final 10 minutes by Ursinus goalie Jess Lamina. Michelle Marsnick (Towaco, NJ/Montville Twp.) contributed two defensive saves in the loss.

Ursinus recorded 16 of its 21 shots and 13 of its 16 penalty corners in the first half.

The Bullets return to action on Wednesday at home against Dickinson. Game time is 3 p.m.
