Massey helps Gettysburg clinch CC playoff berth with sweep of Dickinson

Box Score

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Senior Jayme Massey (Springfield, PA/Merion Mercy Acad.) hit .733 with 11 kills and added a team-high four blocks to help Gettysburg defeat Dickinson 3-0 in Centennial Conference (CC) volleyball action on Tuesday.

Lauren Thul (Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central) and Katie Heffner (Easton, PA/Easton) added eight kills apiece for the Bullets, who clinched a CC playoff berth with the win. Senior Shannan Smith (Milmont Park, PA/Ridley) put up 37 assists on Senior Night while classmate Margaret Hallahan (Huntingdon, PA/Huntingdon) led the defense with 10 digs.

In the opening game, Gettysburg (17-11, 8-2 CC) edged to a 6-5 lead, then used a 13-1 run to take command. Thul fired off three service aces and Massey added a pair of kills to fuel the rally.

An ace from Hallahan made it 22-7 and one of Thul's four kills pushed the lead to 26-11. Thul, Massey and Meghan McConville (Eldersburg, MD/Liberty) delivered kills to finish off the Bullets' .429 hitting performance in a 30-14 victory.

A 13-4 Gettysburg run made the difference in game two. Massey contributed back-to-back kills and a solo block to an 8-1 burst that turned the Red Devils' 6-4 lead into a 12-7 deficit.

Dickinson (7-15, 2-7 CC) crept within 12-10, but Massey killed the next point and Steph Vial (Hanover, PA/Delone Catholic) served back-to-back aces to stretch the lead to 17-10. Seven straight Bullet points built a 26-14 cushion and the hosts cruised to a 30-18 win.

Gettysburg never trailed in game three after Heffner's tip kill broke a 1-all tie. A 4-0 run pulled Dickinson within 16-13, but the Bullets scored seven of the next eight points for a commanding 23-14 decision, forcing the Red Devils' final timeout.

A kill by Erica Rau (Oakland Park, FL/Pine Crest), who along with Massey, Smith and Hallahan were playing their final regular-season home matches, closed out a 30-22 win and the sweep.

Gettysburg hit .320 on Tuesday night, making only 11 errors on 103 attacks.

The Bullets, who are seeking their fifth consecutive CC championship, wrap up their regular season on Saturday at Elizabethtown. Gettysburg faces the host Blue Jays at 11 a.m. and Shippensburg at 1 p.m.
