Box Score
WESTMINSTER, Md. – Nick Wells-Bundtzen (Williamstown, MA/Mt.
Greylock) made seven saves to help Gettysburg tie McDaniel 0-0 in Centennial
Conference (CC) men’s soccer action on Wednesday.
Jesse Gemberling-Johnson (Wyndmoor, PA/Christopher
Dock) took three of the Bullets’ five shots on the afternoon, including
one of two turned aside by Green Terror goalie Andrew Wu. Pat
Brown (Far Hills, NJ/Ridge) and Chris Bayon (Langhorne, PA/Lawrenceville
[NJ]) recorded Gettysburg’s other two shots.
The deadlock gave McDaniel (11-3-2, 5-1-2 CC) a leg up
in the race for the No. 1 seed in next weekend’s CC playoffs. The Bullets (7-5-4,
4-1-3 CC) are among a group of teams with 15 points, trailing the Green Terror
by two heading into the regular season’s final game on Saturday.
At the end of Wednesday, only five points separated the
conference’s top seven teams. The top five qualify for the CC postseason.
Todd Knepper took a game-high four shots
to pace McDaniel, which held a 14-5 advantage in shots and a 13-1 edge in corner
kicks for the day. Will Talesnick added three shots while James DeFrances
forced Wells-Bundtzen to stop both of his attempts.
Despite taking all seven first-half shots, the Green Terror
was unable to solve Wells-Bundtzen. The Bullet keeper made three stops in a five-minute
span midway through the half, tipping a long shot by DeFrances over the crossbar,
then halting attempts by DeFrances and Michael Holt.
Gettysburg’s first scoring opportunity was its best. Brown
received the ball to the right of the McDaniel cage in the 62nd minute, took a
dribble and unleashed a low drive that Wu dove to deflect, preserving the shutout.
The Green Terror nearly won in regulation when Talesnick
turned a shot on Wells-Bundtzen and Knepper headed the rebound just over the crossbar
with fewer than five minutes remaining. Wells-Bundtzen was forced to tip another
Knepper header over the bar with less than one minute left in the second half.
After a relatively quiet 18 minutes of overtimes, both
teams made one last push for the win.
A
McDaniel foul at the top of the box gave the Bullets a free kick from 20 yards
away with fewer than two minutes remaining, but Gemberling-Johnson sent his shot
just wide of the left post.
The
Green Terror appeared to have won the game moments later, but a cross that was
deflected into the goal was called back as a handball.
The shutout was Wells-Bundtzen’s sixth of the season, increasing
his career-high total for a single season. The deadlock was Wu’s fifth in his
last six games.
Gettysburg
returns to action and wraps up the regular season on Saturday at home against
Dickinson. Game time is 4 p.m.
