Gettysburg beats Elizabethtown 3-0 and drops a close match to Shippensburg, 3-2

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – Erica Rau (Oakland Park, FL/Pine Crest) recorded 30 kills as Gettysburg split two non-conference matches at Elizabethtown on Saturday. The Bullets topped host Elizabethtown in three games (30-26, 30-28, 30-20), then were outlasted in a close five-set match by Shippensburg (30-26, 27-30, 30-27, 24-30, 15-11).

In the first of the two matches, Steph Vial (Hanover, PA/Delone Catholic) recorded 20 digs to bring her season total to 538 and break her own single-season dig record of 534 a year ago.

Lauren Thul (Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central) led Gettysburg with 10 kills in the victory over Elizabethown, while Meghan McConville (Eldersburg, MD/Liberty) and Rau each added nine. McConville also had three blocks.

Senior setter Shannan Smith (Milmont Park, PA/Ridley) had 38 assists against the Blue Jays. Smith and Vial tied for the team lead in service aces with three.

Of Rau's 30 kills on the day, 21 came in the tightly contested match with Shippensburg. Katie Heffner (Easton, PA/Easton) contributed 12 kills and Thul had 10 kills for the second straight match.

Vial led the Bullets with four service aces and added another 30 digs in the loss to bring her season total to 568 at the end of regular-season play. Margaret Hallahan (Huntington, PA/Huntington) put up 12 digs in the match.

Smith had 49 assists against the Raiders to brink her career total 4,176 entering the conference tournament.

Jayme Massey (Springfield, PA/Merion Mercy Academy) led the way with three blocks versus Shippensburg.

Gettysburg returns to action on Saturday in the Centennial Conference semifinals hosted by Johns Hopkins. Game time and opponent are to be determined.
