LANCASTER, Pa. – Katie Heffner (Easton, PA/Easton) knocked down a career-high 24 kills, but Gettysburg fell at Franklin & Marshall 3-2 in Centennial Conference (CC) volleyball action on Tuesday.
Shannan Smith (Milmont Park, PA/Ridley) handed out 60 assists for the match to move into second place on the program's all-time career assists list with 3,787, surpassing former teammate Lauren Boyd (3,749 from 1999-2002).
Hillary Prutzman (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) added 12 kills and Jayme Massey (Springfield, PA/Merion Mercy Acad.) also hit double digits with 10 for the Bullets (11-9, 4-2 CC), who fell out of first place in the CC standings with the loss.
The victory snapped the Diplomats' five-game losing streak against Gettysburg which dated back to 2000. Franklin & Marshall moved to 4-1 in the conference with the win.
The Bullets fought back for a 32-30 victory in game one before the Diplomats claimed games two and three by identical 30-24 scores. Gettysburg captured game four 30-21 to set up a decisive and dramatic final game.
Down 13-9, the Bullets rallied with four straight points to pull even. An F&M kill followed by a Gettysburg attacking error, however, delivered a victory to the hosts.
Margaret Hallahan (Huntingdon, PA/Huntingdon) led the Bullets with 25 digs and five service aces. Prutzman paced the team with six solo blocks.
Gettysburg returns to action on Saturday at Washington College. Match time is 1 p.m.
