Wright scores in double OT; Gettysburg claims ECAC championship

ERIE, Pa. – Shaina Wright (Gettysburg, PA/Gettysburg) scored the game-winning goal two minutes and eighteen seconds into the second overtime period as Gettysburg defeated Carnegie Mellon 1-0 for the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Southern Women's Soccer Championship title on Sunday.

With the win, the Bullets improved their all-time record in ECAC tournament games to 3-3 in four appearances and avenge a 2001 ECAC tournament loss to the Tartans. Carnegie Mellon was appearing in their third consecutive ECAC Championship game and defending two consecutive ECAC crowns.

In the 102nd minute, Wright connected on a breakaway pass from Colleen Stuart (Centennial, CO/Arapahoe) to net the game-winner. For Wright, the goal was the second of her career and Stuart picked up her first assist of the season.

The formidable Gettysburg defense thwarted a Carnegie Mellon attack that outshot the Bullets by a margin of 13-7 and held a 7-1 edge in corner kicks. In the net, Kristin Short (Massapequa, NY/St. Anthony's) and Danielle St. Pierre (Londonberry, NH/Trinity) teamed up for the shutout. St. Pierre recorded all three saves including one in overtime.

Nadya Yaghoubi led the Tartan attack with three of the team's 13 shots. Netminder Christie Adams recorded three saves in the losing effort.
.
Sophomore Steph Smith (Cooperstown, NY/Cooperstown) was named the tournament's outstanding player. Smith collected the game-winning goal in a semifinal upset of tournament host Penn State Behrend on Saturday and also collected an assist on an insurance goal later in the contest.
