Ursinus advances to CC semifinals on penalty kicks over women's soccer; Bears, Bullets battle to 1-1 tie

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Gettysburg's Katie Myers (Randallstown MD/WSTES) forced overtime with a goal in the 84th minute, but Ursinus advanced to the Centennial Conference (CC) semifinals on kicks Wednesday.

After a 1-1 regulation and two period of scoreless overtime, the Bears posted a 2-0 advantage in the shootout round, getting goals from Elaine DeFeliciantonio and Jessica Hartline.

With the loss, the Bullets (8-7-3) fell to 0-1-1 against Ursinus (13-3-2) this season and were halted in their quest to defend last year's CC championship.

The Bears opened the scoring when Lauren Washam took a restart following a Gettysburg penalty just inside the midfield. DiFeliciantonio headed the kick to Chelsea Morin, who finished the shot low on the right side to make it 1-0 in the 21st minute. The goal was Morin's seventh of the year.

Gettysburg had an opportunity to tie the game on a Shaina Wright (Gettysburg, PA/Gettysburg) shot, but Washam made a defensive save to preserve the Bears' lead going into the half.

Ursinus thwarted several Bullet scoring opportunities in the second half before the visitors knotted the game.

In the 66th minute, Ursinus goalie Ashley Potter tipped a Kelly Burke (Greenwood, CO/St. Mary's Academy) shot into the crossbar. Washam made her second defensive save of the game on another shot from Burke in the 77th minute and Erin Miller (Massapequa, NY/St. Anthony's) hit the post two minutes later.

Myers, named the CC Player of the Year on Tuesday, volleyed a header from Katie Ferraro (Westminster, CO/St. Mary's Academy) into the left side of the goal to knot the score at 1 with 5:53 remaining in regulation.

Christine Heerwagen (Sudbury, MA/Lincoln-Sudbury Regional) made a defensive save in the 86th minute to preserve the tie.

The overtime periods lapsed without a shot from either team.

In penalty kicks, the Bullets came up empty on four shots – two went wide and two were stopped by backup goalie Lisa Clark, who entered play at the start of the shootout. For the Bears, DeFeliciantonio capitalized on her team's second shot and Hartline on the third to secure Ursinus' advancement to the semifinal round of the CC tournament.
