Box Score
BALTIMORE, Md. – Brad Tabor (Kinnelon,
NJ/Kinnelon) scored the game-winning penalty kick and Nick Wells-Bundtzen
(Williamstown, MA/Mt. Greylock) followed with the clinching save as Gettysburg
advanced past Johns Hopkins and into the Centennial Conference (CC) semifinals
on kicks. The two teams battled to
a 1-1 tie in 110 minutes of regulation and overtime, their second tie of the season.
The Bullets ran their record to 7-6-5 while advancing to play top-seeded McDaniel
in the semifinals on Saturday. Game time is 11:30 a.m.
In a scoreless first half, Johns Hopkins held the edge
in shots 8-2 and corner kicks 5-1, but Wells-Bundtzen kept the Bullets in the
game with five saves.
Gettysburg
started the second half with two scoring opportunities. Pat Brown (Far Hills,
NJ/Ridge) shook loose in the 57th minute, but his shot sailed high. Garrett
Bruno (Harrisburg, PA/Susquehanna Twp.) had a chance in the 65th minute
and his shot from 15 yards out hit the crossbar.
Bruno
did take advantage of his next scoring opportunity. After a foul in the box, Bruno
took a penalty kick and deposited it in the bottom left corner of the net to give
the Bullets a 1-0 advantage at the 72:22 mark.
The
Blue Jays answered quickly to knot the game at 1-1 when Nicholas Gauna
punched in a rebound at 76:33.
Neither
team scored in the remaining minutes of regulation and the game went to overtime.
Hopkins outshot the Bullets in the first overtime, 2-1, but neither team put the
ball in the net.
In the second
overtime period, Matthew Carlson had a great scoring chance in the
105th minute, but his shot hit the crossbar. The game ended in a 1-1 tie, and
it took penalty kicks to determine who advanced to the next round of the CC playoffs.
In the opening set of five penalty kicks, the Bullets and
Blue Jays both scored four times each. Chris Bayon (Langhorne, PA/Lawrenceville
School [NJ]), Brown, Bruno, and Ryan Franks (Medford, NJ/Shawnee)

Simon, and Doug Pollack scored for the Blue Jays. Pollack’s
shot, which was tipped by Wells-Bundtzen, knocked off the right post and into
the goal to force another round of penalty kicks.
In the first sudden death round, Tabor converted his shot
into the bottom left of the goal past Dan Coble. Guana had the next
shot and Wells-Bundtzen came up with a diving save to his left, allowing Gettysburg
to advance to the next round of the playoffs. He finished the game with nine saves.
Johns Hopkins outshot the Bullets 24-8 and were led by Guana
with six shots and Blaine Phillips with four. Gettysburg was led by Bruno and
Cameron Bonfield (Princeton, NJ/The Hun School) with two shots apiece.
