Fromm has big night, but York outguns Gettysburg, 89-80

Box Score

YORK, Pa. – Kenny Fass led four players in double figures with 21 points as sixth-ranked York (Pa.) used 59-percent shooting to defeat Gettysburg 89-80 in non-conference action on Tuesday.

Nate Fry went 5-for-6 from 3-point range to finish with a career-high 19 points while Chad McGowan also added 19 for the Spartans (3-0), a national semifinalist in 2004-05. The win was York's 18th straight at home.

Erik Fromm (Swedesboro, NJ/Kingsway Regional) hit 10 of 13 shots to lead the Bullets (2-1) with 23 points, a single-game total topped only by his 26 in Gettysburg's last trip to York in 2003. Matt Whelan (Ridgefield, CT/Ridgefield/Worcester Acad. [MA]) and Todd Brady (Hancock, NH/ConVal) chipped in with 12 points apiece.

Following a 3-pointer by Fromm that snapped a 31-all tie with 2:20 left before halftime, the Spartans scored the final eight points of the half and never trailed the rest of the way.

McGowan hit a jumper to make it 34-33, then drained two free throws to put the hosts ahead to stay. Layups by Brandon Bushey and Fry in the final 45 seconds gave York a 39-34 lead at the break.

The Spartans extended the lead to 45-36 in the opening two minutes of the second half, getting a layup from McGowan and two buckets from Fass.
Gettysburg answered with a 13-6 run keyed by two 3-pointers from Mike Spadafora (Richboro, PA/Archbishop Wood), the latter cutting the deficit to 51-49 with 14:06 to play.

From there, however, York took over.

Fry nailed back-to-back threes and Quinn Howard hit a layup to push the lead to double digits and force a Bullet timeout. Brian Sateja (Morristown, NJ/Delbarton) temporarily halted the run with a jumper, but 3-pointers from Fass and Fry made it 65-51, capping a 14-2 Spartan burst.

York led by as many as 18 down the stretch before cruising to the victory, the first by a home team in its annual meeting with Gettysburg since 1999.

Brady opened the scoring with a 3-pointer on the game's first possession and the Bullets led by as many as 27-21 on Joe Spierenburg's (Chambersburg, PA/St. Maria Goretti [MD]) first collegiate field goal with 7:24 left in the first half.

The Spartans answered with a 10-2 run to take a 31-29 lead, but Mike Beck (Clearwater, FL/Clearwater) converted a layup and Fromm nailed a 3-pointer to give Gettysburg its last lead of the night.

York shot 58.5 percent from the floor for the game, including a 9-for-15 showing from 3-point range. Brad Zerfing was the fourth Spartan in double digits with 10 points.

In addition to his 12-point night, Brady also dished out six assists and added six rebounds. Fromm led the Bullets with seven boards and also matched a career high with three 3-pointers.

Gettysburg returns to action and opens Centennial Conference play on Tuesday at home against Franklin & Marshall. Game time is 8 p.m.
