GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Jennifer Bengel (Timonium, MD/Roland Park) posted her third double-double of the season with 20 points and 11 rebounds to lead Gettysburg over Bryn Mawr 73-49 in Centennial Conference (CC) women's basketball action on Wednesday.
Bengel, the CC's active leader with 31 career double-doubles, hit 7 of 11 shots while reaching the 20-point mark for the third straight game. Megan Hartman (Lewistown, PA/Indian Valley) added a career-high 12 points, helping the Bullets (3-2, 2-0 CC) improve to 12-0 all-time against the Owls (1-3, 0-2 CC).
Amy Tarbell (Westminster, MD/East Greenwich [RI]) also reached double digits with 10 points to go with six rebounds.
Amy Johnson went 7-for-10 to lead Bryn Mawr with 18 points along with a team-high seven rebounds. Jessica Allen chipped in with 11 points and six boards.
After watching the Owls play with a lead for most of the game's first 10 minutes, Gettysburg built a 12-point halftime advantage before running away in the second half.
With her team trailing 14-12, Hartman tied the game with a fast-break layup and Katie Eiden (Silver Spring, MD/Georgetown Visitation [DC]) finished a move the basket to put the Bullets ahead to stay. Eiden and Bengel then added back-to-back layups to make it 20-14 and force Bryn Mawr's second timeout in fewer than two minutes.
A Johnson layup kept the Owls within three at 22-19 before Bengel took over. The senior forward hit two free throws, knocked down a jumper, then made a steal to set up her own 3-pointer, finishing a personal 7-0 run that gave Gettysburg a 29-19 lead with 3:15 left in the half.
Two free throws from Hartman with five ticks left set the halftime margin at 34-22.
The Bullets reeled off 17 of the second half's first 19 points to take a commanding 51-24 lead with 14:35 remaining. Bengel added seven points during the stretch while Tarbell and Hartman chipped in with four apiece.
Gettysburg built a 28-point lead on two occasions, the latter following a jumper by Lauren Smith (Clifton, VA/Shepherd Hill Reg. [MA]) that made it 67-39 with 4:59 left. Smith finished with six points and four rebounds in her collegiate debut.
Local product Ali Moyer (Gettysburg, PA/Gettysburg) added her first four collegiate points in the win. With her seven field goals, Bengel moved into fourth place on the program's all-time list for career field goals made (478).
Shannon McPherson scored nine points for the Owls, who jumped to a 9-5 lead in the opening 5 minutes, 6 seconds and led 14-12 on a Johnson free throw with 10:14 left in the first half.
The Bullets return to action on Saturday at Ursinus. Game time is 1 p.m.
