Gettysburg defeats Haverford, advances to CC finals

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Katie Heffner (Easton, PA/Easton) and Meghan McConville (Eldersburg, MD/Liberty) hit a combined .594 with 19 kills to help Gettysburg defeat Haverford 3-0 semifinal round Centennial Conference (CC) playoff action on Saturday.

 With the win, the second-seeded Bullets (19-12) will face fourth-seeded Franklin & Marshall in the CC finals tomorrow. Match time is 1 p.m.

 McConville had 11 kills, Lauren Thul (Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central) added 10 kills, and Heffner had eight for the Bullets, who hit .356 as a team against the Fords.

 In the opening game, Gettysburg jumped out to a 16-4 lead with the help of two big runs. With Thul serving, the Bullets scored five consecutive points highlighted by two aces. With Heffner serving, Gettysburg rattled off seven consecutive points aided by three kills from McConville.

 McConville and Jayme Massey (Springfield, PA/Merion Mercy Acad.) delivered kills to finish off the Bullets' .522 hitting performance in a 30-17 victory.

 Gettysburg used an eight-point run, keyed by two aces from Margaret Hallahan (Huntingdon, PA/Huntingdon), to take an 8-2 early lead in game two. The Bullets then used a five-point run to push their lead to 16-8 and proceeded to build a 26-12 cushion before cruising to a 30-16 win.

 Gettysburg never trailed in game three, but Haverford rallied to keep the score close. The Bullets jumped out to a 10-4 lead, but the Fords cut the lead to 13-12 on a kill by K'Lynn Solt. Gettysburg was able to pull ahead by 24-19, but the resilient Fords fought back to put them within one point, 25-24, on a kill from Jordan Thompson.

 The Bullets clinched the game 30-26 on two late kills by McConville.

 Gettysburg hit .365 on the day, making only 11 errors on 85 attacks.

  In the win, first-team All-CC setter Shannan Smith (Milmont Park, PA/Ridley) had 28 assists and second-team All-CC libero Steph Vial (Hanover, PA/Delone Catholic) had 10 digs.

  Heidi Jutsum had eight kills and Samantha Thomson had 14 digs for the Fords.
