GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Maura Downey (Lancaster, PA/Lancaster Catholic) scored her second goal of the day in overtime to push Gettysburg past McDaniel 3-2 in semifinal round Centennial Conference (CC) playoff action on Saturday.

With the win, the second-seeded Bullets (14-5) will face top-seeded Ursinus in the CC finals tomorrow at Ursinus. Game time is 1 p.m.

Similar to their regular season meeting, Gettysburg prevailed in overtime with Downey the hero. The Green Terror had two quick scoring chances in overtime, but they were stopped by Bullets goalkeeper Katherine Corkhill (Paoli, PA/Acad. of Notre Dame). The Bullets went on the offensive and came back winners.

Among a crowd in front of the cage, Bridget Seidel (Mohnton, PA/Governor Mifflin) found Downey for the game-winning score 1:18 into the overtime period. This marked the second time this season that Downey defeated the Green Terror with an overtime goal – the other came on Oct. 19 at McDaniel.

Krissy Browning (Baldwin, MD/Fallston) got Gettysburg on the board first with an unassisted goal in the 25th minute of the contest. The goal was her 11th of the season and the only one of the first half.

Early in the second half, McDaniel tied the game at one on an unassisted goal from Carolanne Bianco.

Gettysburg answered four minutes later to regain the lead when Downey put the ball in the cage past Erika Wawzyanick on a penalty stroke.

Two minutes later the score was once again tied. Jamie Nash took a pass from Jamie Smith and deposited it past Corkhill to knot the game at two.

Neither team scored in the remaining minutes of regulation, setting up the dramatic finish.

Downey’s goals were her fifth and sixth of the season. Downey and Seidel led the Bullets with four shots each. Browning added three while CC scoring leader Meg Goddu (Chadds Ford, PA/Unionville) took two shots.

Corkhill made six saves for the Bullets while Wawzyanick made eight saves for the Green Terror.

Gettysburg is seeking its fifth CC championship and its first since 2001. The Bullets fell to Ursinus 4-0 when the teams met in the regular season.
