GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Garrett Bruno (Harrisburg, PA/Susquehanna Twp.) scored the game-winning goal on a penalty kick in the 104th minute to lead Gettysburg past McDaniel 1-0 in semifinal round Centennial Conference (CC) playoff action on Saturday.

Gettysburg ran its record to 8-6-5 with the upset of top-seeded McDaniel. The fifth-seeded Bullets will try to complete their improbable run to the CC championship when they face third-seeded Muhlenberg tomorrow at McDaniel. Game time is 1 p.m.

With the game scoreless and likely heading toward a penalty-kick shootout, Gettysburg found a way to prevail. A McDaniel defender was called for a hand ball in the box when he knocked down a crossing pass. Bruno, who also converted a penalty kick goal against Johns Hopkins on Wednesday, took the penalty kick and hammered it past McDaniel goalkeeper Andrew Wu for the win.

This game was marked by a battle of two all-conference goalkeepers, Gettysburg’s Nick Wells-Bundtzen (Williamstown, MA/Mt. Greylock) and McDaniel’s Wu.

The first half did not see many scoring opportunities, but both goalkeepers made key saves to keep their teams in the game. Brad Tabor (Kinnelon, NJ/Kinnelon), Chris Bayon (Langhorne, PA/Lawrenceville School [NJ]), and Jesse Gemberling-Johnson Wyndmoor, PA/Christopher Dock) each had chances for the Bullets midway through the period, but nobody found the back of the net. Donzell Tate had the Green Terror’s best scoring chance late in the half, but he was denied by Wells-Bundtzen.

Gettysburg outshot McDaniel 8-2 and had a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks, but could not put the ball past Wu in the second half. He denied a Bullet offensive attack in the final eight minutes of regulation in which Gettysburg had four corner kicks. Off the corners, Bayon took two shots and Bruno took one with Wu making two saves.

In overtime, Wells-Bundtzen was the star for the Bullets. In the first overtime he stopped shots by Scott Martin and Todd Knepper. In the second overtime, he came up big saving another shot by Knepper before Gettysburg took the ball back to the offensive zone and found a way to win.

Wells-Bundtzen finished the game with four saves and Wu had seven.

Bruno’s goal was his team-leading sixth of the season. Bayon led the Bullets with four shots while Bruno and Gemberling-Johnson added three each. Knepper led the Green Terror with three shots.

Gettysburg is seeking its fourth CC championship and its first since 2001. The Bullets defeated Muhlenberg 2-1 in double overtime when the teams met during the regular season.
