Box Score
WESTMINSTER, Md. – Christopher King
scored the game-winning goal in the 14th minute to lead Muhlenberg past Gettysburg
2-0 in the Centennial Conference (CC) men’s soccer final on Sunday.
The Bullets, who were the first
fifth seed to ever reach the CC finals, fell short of winning their first CC title
since 2001 and dropped to 8-7-5. With the win, Muhlenberg received the CC’s automatic
bid to the NCAA tournament. The
Mules jumped out to an early lead when King knocked the ball past several Bullet
defenders from 20 yards out and into the net just 14 minutes into the game. The
goal was unassisted. Muhlenberg
struck again 10 minutes later when James Henshaw found an open Jose
Ramirez, who shot the ball past Gettysburg goalkeeper Nick Wells-Bundtzen
(Williamstown, MA/Mt. Greylock) into the top right corner of the net.
Muhlenberg rebuffed all of the
offensive attacks Gettysburg mounted the rest of the game. The Bullets got off
six shots, including three by Jesse Gemberling-Johnson (Wyndmoor, PA/Christopher
Dock), but none got past Mules goalkeeper Peter Bennett,
who made one save on the day for the shutout.
Wells-Bundtzen made four saves for the Bullets, who will await
a possible berth in next week’s ECAC tournament. The ECAC field will be announced
on Monday. CC
