Ursinus downs Gettysburg 5-1, wins second straight CC title

Box Score

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Lindsay Cappa scored two goals, including the game-winner, to lead No. 2 Ursinus over No. 15 Gettysburg 5-1 in the Centennial Conference (CC) field hockey championship game on Sunday.

With the win, top-seeded Ursinus received the CC’s automatic berth to the NCAA tournament, but the Bullets (14-6) still have hopes to claim an NCAA at-large bid. The tournament bracket will be announced late Sunday.

Gettysburg’s lone goal came early in the second half, when Krissy Browning (Baldwin, MD/Fallston) beat her defender and slid the ball into an empty cage. The goal was her 12th of the season and her second in as many games.

Bullet goalkeeper Katherine Corkhill (Paoli, PA/Acad. of Notre Dame) made six saves in the first half. However, the Bears outshot Gettysburg 12-2 and scored three goals in the first frame. Cappa had two goals and Karen Wendler knocked in the other. Kait Sutherland assisted Wendler’s goal and Cappa’s second score.

The Bullets went on the attack with shots by Browning, Becky Latta (West Chester, PA/Henderson), and CC scoring leader Meg Goddu (Chadds Ford, PA/Unionville), but only Browning found the cage on the day.

After Browning’s tally, Ursinus did not allow the Bullets to score again and added two late insurance goals by Jessica Rogers and Jenni Moore.

Corkhill finished the game with 11 saves. Michelle Marsnick (Towaco, NJ/Montville Township) had a defensive save for the Bullets, who were outshot 21-6 and had a 14-4 disadvantage on penalty corners.
