Box Score
GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Katie Ferraro (Westminster,
CO/St. Mary’s Acad.) scored the night’s only goal in the 83rd minute to
lift Gettysburg over Franklin & Marshall 1-0 in the first round of the ECAC
Division III Southern Women’s Soccer Championship on Wednesday.
With the win, the Bullets (9-7-3) advanced to face top-seeded
Penn State Behrend on Saturday in the ECAC semifinals. Game time is 11 a.m. The
Lions will host the semifinals and championship game this weekend in Erie, Pa.
Katie Myers (Randallstown, MD/WSTES) notched
her fourth assist of the season on Ferraro’s game-winner, the fifth time this
year that the two have combined on a goal. The late tally helped Gettysburg improve
to 14-4 all-time against F&M.
Meeting
for the first time in postseason play, the Bullets and Diplomats battled scorelessly
until the game’s final minutes.
On
the winning play, Myers drove to the left of the box and struck a cross that eluded
F&M goalie Robyn Jones. The ball lingered momentarily in front of an open
net before Ferraro put it home with 7:45 left in regulation.
Myers nearly made it 2-0 moments later, but Jones came
up with the best of her five saves on the night to keep it a one-goal game. Jennifer
Kahn had the Diplomats’ best chance to tie after gathering a turnover
in the 89th minute, but Bullet goalie Kristin Short (Massapequa, NY/St.
Anthony’s) made her lone save of the night to preserve the shutout, her
fifth this season.
After a
first half that featured only two shots – both by Gettysburg’s Shaina Wright
(Gettysburg, PA/Gettysburg) – both teams picked up the pace in the final
45 minutes.
Shortly after halftime,
Steph Heath (Scotch Plains, NJ/Scotch Plains-Fanwood) had a dangerous
shot blocked before it reached Jones and Myers hit a second-chance shot wide right
in the 64th minute. A Bullet free kick to the left of the box in the 80th minute
resulted in a routine save by Jones on Heath.
Minutes
later, however, Ferraro untied the match with her sixth goal – and first game-winner
– of the season.
Wright, who
recorded a goal and assist in Gettysburg’s 2-0 regular-season win over F&M,
finished with a team-high three shots on Wednesday. Myers, Heath and Ferraro added
two apiece.
The win was the
Bullets’ first in four ECAC appearances, following set-backs in 1991, 1992 and
2001. Saturday’s match-up with Penn State Behrend will be the first between the
two programs.
