Box Score

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Jennifer Bengel (Timonium, MD/Roland Park) tied a career high with 33 points and added seven rebounds and seven steals, leading Gettysburg past Haverford 78-57 in Centennial Conference (CC) women's basketball action on Saturday.

Bengel went 11-for-16 from the floor and 10-for-10 from the free throw line to move into third place on the program's all-time scoring list, surpassing Kelly Geise's 1,342 points from 1991-95. With 1,359 career points, Bengel trails only Sue Marshall (1,457 from 1981-85) and Ann Hymes (1,462 from 1992-96).

Kathryn Reilly (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) and Amy Tarbell (Westminster, MD/East Greenwich [RI]) added 10 points apiece for the Bullets (4-4, 3-2 CC), who raced to a 30-9 lead and improved to 15-0 all-time against the Fords (1-9, 0-5 CC).

Claire Scribner paced Haverford with 12 points and eight rebounds while Brittany Lattisaw added seven points and seven boards off the bench.

After jumping to a 21-point lead midway through the first half, Gettysburg held off a number of Ford comeback attempts to snap a two-game losing streak.

Two layups and a 3-pointer from Bengel staked the Bullets to a 9-0 lead before Erica Juliano hit a jumper to put Haverford on the board. Gettysburg answered with the next 13 points, including four from Tarbell and three free throws by Katie Eiden (Silver Spring, MD/Georgetown Visitation [DC]), to make it 22-2 with 12:39 left in the half.

Bengel gave the Bullets' their largest lead of the half at 30-9 by converting two free throws, then stealing the ball on the Fords' next possession and knocking down a jumper.

Gettysburg led 36-17 before two jumpers by Lattisaw and one from Scribner cut the deficit to 13 at halftime.

Bengel moved past Geise with a layup in the opening minutes of the second half, helping the Bullets build a 46-28 lead with 14:47 to play. Haverford ripped off a 9-0 run to pull within 46-37, then whittled the margin to 51-45 on a pair of Scribner free throws with 9:18 left.

Gettysburg, however, answered with a 12-0 run over the next 3 minutes, 29 seconds to seal the win. Bengel contributed eight points, two rebounds and one steal during the burst, making it 63-45 with 5:49 remaining. A layup with 4:47 left closed the senior's 33-point performance.

Bengel and Margaret White (Burke, VA/Robinson) led the Bullets with four assists apiece while Jamie Marshall (Pottsville, PA/Nativity B.V.M.) added seven points, four boards and three assists.

Katie Crowley and Bea Chang added seven points apiece in the loss.

Gettysburg returns to action on Wednesday, Dec. 21 against Penn State Behrend at the Las Vegas Tournament. Game time is 6:30 p.m. EST.
