Second-half surge lifts McDaniel over Gettysburg, 74-66

WESTMINSTER, Md. – Joe Hunter hit six 3-pointers and scored all of his game-high 23 points in the second half to lead McDaniel past Gettysburg 74-66 in Centennial Conference (CC) action on Saturday.

The McDaniel win snaps an 11-game winning streak the Bullets (3-4, 1-2 CC) held over the Green Terror (4-4, 2-2 CC). The last McDaniel win over Gettysburg came during the 1999-2000 campaign.
 
Gettysburg was led by Erik Fromm (Swedesboro, NJ/Kingsway Regional), who scored a team-high 17 points on 7-of-11 shooting and grabbed a game-high eight rebounds. Matt Whelan (Ridgefield, CT/Ridgefield) added 15 points for the Bullets.

Down by 20 with 15:08 remaining, McDaniel started a 20-3 run on a 3-pointer by Ryan Finch. Hunter scored 12 points during the run, highlighted by his three 3-pointers. Finch closed the run with a layup cutting the Gettysburg lead to 51-48.

Both teams traded baskets with Fromm hitting two shots in the paint until Hunter hit his fifth 3-pointer of the game, giving McDaniel a 59-58 lead with 3:45 remaining. This was the first Green Terror lead since 14:45 to go in the first half.

Fromm tied the game 60-60 with 2:20 to go, but another 3-pointer from Hunter pushed McDaniel into the lead for good.

McDaniel iced the game by hitting seven free throws in the final minute. The Green Terror outscored the Bullets 53-33 in the second half.

In contrast to the second half, the first half was all Gettysburg.

Freshman Renato Tambellini (Millville, NJ/Sacred Heart) hit a 3-pointer, his first collegiate basket, to give the Bullets an early 12-10 lead. His shot started a 19-2 Gettysburg run in which the Bullets were 5-of-6 from behind the 3-point arc.

Mike Beck (Clearwater, FL/Clearwater) scored seven points during the run and Mike Spadafora (Richboro, PA/Archbishop Wood) added six points on two three point shots.
 
Trailing by 19, McDaniel made a late run in the first half to cut the lead to 12 at halftime, 33-21.
 
Spadafora finished the game with 11 points for the Bullets, his fourth consecutive game in double figures. Finch scored 16 for the Green Terror.
 
Gettysburg shot 55 percent from the floor in the loss while the Green Terror shot 56 percent from behind the 3-point arc.
 
The Bullets return to action on Saturday at home against Messiah. Game time is 2 p.m.
